Long Form Sunday Recommendation: Fall of Civilizations

If it’s as wet and chilly today where you are as it is here, I want to recommend a fascinating series from the UK, “Fall of Civilizations.”

The presentations are originally in podcast form, but the episodes are also posted to YouTube with added maps and video segments that add to the richness of the programs.

I just finished watching episode 5 on Easter Island. I went into it thinking I knew all there was about what happened to the peoples who carved the great monoliths and drove themselves to ecological destruction. Now I scoff at my silly notions derived from an old episode of Nova.

Before that, host Paul Cooper gives a guided tour of the collapse of Roman Britain, The Bronze Age, The Mayans, The Vikings of Greenland and the Khmer Empire of present day Cambodia And that just half way through the episodes available.

  1. I read a lot of history. Among my favorites, the Durants’ 11 vols, Churchill’s “History of the English Speaking Peoples”, Wells’ “Outline” Gibbon, etc. Each is worth reading repeatedly.
This series is an excellent means to visualize the era in question.
Another (more compact) series by Dr Eugen Weber is available on YT.

  2. So there’s 4 of us into history.

All the video recommendations in this thread are excellent. Also, you don’t have to watch the fall of civilization videos in order. I started with the Sumerians episode and watched the rest in order of interest.

Spoiler alert….. a few people die in these episodes.
