At what age is it too late to learn to play drums?

Chris Farley on drums!

Going way back in time, one of the guys that we all hung out with couldn’t wait for the band to ask if there was anybody in the crowd that wanted to play along with them. Marty would be up on the stage before they could say no, he was an amateur drummer that could fool you for a short time. He would pretend to play the song that that band was playing and after a minute or two he would launch into his own invented drum solo. It was so funny, the band wouldn’t know what to do and they would stop playing hoping Marty would give up, but he wouldn’t. Eventually the bouncers would be called to wrestle him away. Half the crowd would love it, the other half wanted to kick his ass. We loved it. Fun days!

the shows all about the drummer … not the music (which, in this case might be a good thing)
once had a lead guitarist that made every song imitation Angus Young
… drove me freakin’ nuts!
I’d only want this drummer in my band if my band was this lame

@Hilda Matilda – it’s never too late. I started at 36 and played until just a year or so ago (I’ll be 75 in Dec.) One of our local teachers has lady drum students well into their 60’s.

As a drummer I think he’s great. After all, in a rock band the most important person is the drummer. If any one else doesn’t show up for the job, they can muddle through. If the drummer doesn’t show – they’re dead in the water.

Adrienne, I’ve got to disagree, there is a Marty in every crowd.

That’s pretty funny.

firstly, this is not a rock tune … it’s pop
The Beatles were not great until they got Ringo … this guy ain’t Ringo
Hendrix didn’t need a great drummer, nor Holly, Presley, & many’60’s/’70’s bands . how many great drum solos did Don Henley knock out? Clapton moved on from Ginger Baker, had a great solo career, what about Baker?
… it wasn’t ’till the ’70’s that the ‘power drummers’, like Moon or Bonham showed up … guys like Krupa & Rich were Pop/jazz
secondly, this drummer needs to get a gig w/ a ‘Led Zeppelin’ tribute band … he’d do better as an imitation Bonzo … other than that, he’s a comedy act … a good one, but still a comedy act
thirdly, drummers are an integral part of an ensemble. the beat is necessary to control the chaos of the other individual performers & bring them back to the structure of the song. Starkey was a master at this. it’s why the Beatles songs were so tight
… & I still love to put in the buds & get lost in Iron Butterfly’s full version of ‘Inna Godda Da Vida’ …. come to think of it, excuse me whilst I go indulge myself

If it makes me smile, it’s entertainment. Bravo. (Most musicians are too full of themselves.)

I enjoyed the hell out of that. It was a pretty cut-rate rendition of a very good Van Morrison track with a talented drummer.
But I preach to the choir.

Yes, he’s a good drummer, but what are his political opinions?
Spazz
Hilda, I started playing drums.at 54!
I bought a used Roland electronic kit for $300, watched some good videos on how to play a backbeat, and in about five minutes I had it.
Best tip – hold the sticks as tightly as you would hold a small bird, and keep your upper body, neck and face relaxed.
Good luck.
Heck yeah! He’s great unless the lead singer has ego issues.
This is the kind of group that plays those canned gigs; wedding receptions, formal parties, stuff like that; all of which gets so boring and repetitive. The drummer and his ‘antics’ are a way that they show the folks that they get it and are more than aware that they are far from cutting edge.
You cannot take yourself too seriously when you are not on top of the heap. If you do, your ego will make a fool of you. These guys obviously have well founded understanding of the role in the musical world that they fulfill…..
I have a thing for shooting the key board player.

This is why Eddie Van Halen hated David Lee Roth.

Where’s the drum solo? He was just warming up.
found it

I would not want him in my band for two reasons:
1. I have no band
2. I wouldn’t want to waste his talent with my lack of musical talent
Joe Biden’s body language coach?
Stirrin, watched that last night.
He is very artful and musical. He’s a good drummer.
Steve Moore is an excellent drummer
