Radiohead released the original version of this oft covered song on their phenomenal 1996 album, “OK, Computer.” The tenth track, “No Surprises” has had a life of its own since, being performed in numerous ways by many.
to get us off right in this short review of a few examples of covers, I suggest a cleanly rendering version pared down to electric guitar and piano. Perhaps while enjoying the lyrics you’ll understand why I’ve been listening to this particular piece a lot lately. Start Here
One of the earliest covers I know of was recorded by pianist Christopher O’Riley’s 15 years ago on his “Hold Me To This,” album of Radiohead covers, but for a piano interpretation that gets the most from the simple melody without drowning in flourish, I prefer this one. Here
How about a full orchestral variation that was recorded just last March? Here
Of the version’s I’ve watched today of “No Surprises” this one touched my heart deepest, perhaps because of the performer’s charm or that he was kind enough to respond to my comment on his video almost immediately. Here
Tar, odd, I searched this same song last night but couldn’t listen.
I believe Mr. Watkinson’s cover is more viable than Radiohead’s.
I was once a RH fan, they got me through a very tough patch of sobriety.
A lot of people believe the song is about a person driven to suicide, but the members of the band state that’s it’s about a person trying to keep it together and can’t. I guess like listening to the Blues, there’s strength in hearing someone else going through hardship as well. Glad you’re OK now. We’ll all get through this too, together.- Dr. Tar
Dr.Tar, I hate to tell you but that graphic looks like a Sarah Palin image targeting Gabby Giffords.
