BNO-

A large explosion has been reported in the vicinity of an oil platform off the coast of Azerbaijan, but the exact cause was not immediately clear. A since-deleted statement from the state oil company blamed a possible mud volcano.

The incident happened at 9:30 p.m. local time on Sunday when a large explosion and fire were reported in the Caspian Sea south of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Large flames were seen shooting into the sky.

Local media initially reported that an explosion had occurred on an oil platform, but this was later denied by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), which said no accidents had taken place.

Initial indications are that the explosion was caused by a mud volcano, the oil company said in a statement. The statement was later deleted and reposted online without mentioning a possible cause.

  1. On October 19th, 1989, I was the closest human being to an explosion of this magnitude. I was less than 100 feet from the edge of the fireball but managed to escape serious injury thanks to Nomex and other PPE. It will change your outlook on life. Rex Tillerson sucks!

  2. In the middle of a natural gas field and they want the world to believe the ignition source was mud? Yeah, I guess I can see that! Yup, and Biden won the election too!
