Vice President Kamala Harris laid flowers Wednesday at the Hanoi memorial site where late Sen. John McCain was shot down in 1967 by the North Vietnamese when he was a Navy fighter pilot.

Standing in the pouring rain, Harris noted that Wednesday marked three years since McCain died from brain cancer on Aug. 25, 2018. 

The vice president visited the memorial after concluding her bilateral meetings with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Ngyuen Xuan Phuc, part of her one-week trip through Southeast Asia. 

McCain was held as a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam where he was sometimes tortured and kept in solitary confinement until his release in 1973.

  13. Why do the commies have a memorial to McCain in the first place. I didn’t know that the N. Vietnamese had a memorial to where McCain was shot down by a SAM missile in 1967. Who puts up memorials to their enemies in the first place? I just don’t get it.

  15. The video of the Forrestal fire which I watched in firefighting school before I went out to sea on the Kitty Hawk was one of the scariest and most horrifying things I’ve ever watched. McCain may not have started the fire but like a coward he ran and hid while his shipmates bore the brunt of that horrific fire which killed about 140 sailors including his Plane Captain. If he hadn’t been the son of an Admiral and the grandson of another Admiral he should’ve never been in the Navy in the first place.

  22. We have met the enemy and the enemy is super patriots like McCain and flat out traitors like john effin kerry. The enemy of my enemy is still my enemy. By his actions and inactions McCain was an enemy to this country and it showed in how he treated us as his enemy because we didn’t support his misguided un American policies.

  30. Its not a memorial to honor McCain. Its a monument to celebrate the fact that he was shot down. To honor the people who got him

    The Vietnamese knew who McCain’s father was and treated McCain as a kind of war trophy.

    Some of commentators instincts were on the mark. Why would you honor a guy who dropped bombs on you?
