  1. I once read how LBJ “won” his Silver Star. He had been made a Lt. Commander, even though he had no training. He did not even know that he was supposed to salute senior officers — he thought they were supposed to salute him.

He was on a plane in the Pacific somewhere. There was a Japanese plane in the same time zone, so Johnson was awarded the Silver Star. While Higher ups told how Johnson was the bravest man who ever lived, veterans of the unit involved said the mission Johnson was on was a milk run. No one else on the plane got a Silver Star. That was the only mission Johnson ever went on.

I went on a tour of his Air Force One. His desk chair on the plane was higher than everyone else’s so he could look down on them as a form of intimidation.

I was at a function in 1979. Also there was the current head of National Public Radio. I can’t think of his name, but he had been part of the Johnson White House. He said that no Democrat would EVER have recorded conversations in the Oval Office as did Nixon. Something that Nixon forever resented was that Democrats kept saying that, but it was LBJ that told him he should do it *and showed him how it was done). Since then, tape nade by JFK have also surfaced.
