Zombie Agencies

American Thinker

How many federal agencies do we pay for?  I bet you think, as I once did, that a quick internet search would tell.  But researching for an essay a couple of years ago, I found numbers varying from 78 to 158, and websites saying the exact number was impossible to determine.

Looking at the USA.gov website recently, I discovered a tab for Federal Agencies A to Z (actually there are none past W).  Scrolling around the list for two days, subtracting duplicate listings, like Useless Policy, Office of and Office of Useless Policy, I counted 456 [emphasis added] (and a few more as I checked some links while drafting this essay). More

  1. If I were president (which of course I would actually need to try…), first thing I would do is make every single person paid by Executive Branch prove his worth – every department, etc. Basically, like an efficiency consultant I would make everyone reapply for their own job. Of course there would be some logistics involved in managing this but I think it could be done within a couple of years. And then would get rid of positions, departments, vast swaths of wasteful spending.
Next, I would follow Herman Cain’s advice and only sign bills that were less than 3 pages long and addressed a single issue. Including ‘omnibus’ bills – in fact especially omnibus bills – the purpose of which is to hide spending.
Here is a good site for spending analysis: https://www.openthebooks.com/

Part of the problem is that our spending is so overwhelming that we don’t even try anymore.

  2. Now add in the states, counties and cities and roughly 50% of our work force is in government.

The American ‘state’ is the equivalent of the European ‘King.’

    REBOOT!

  3. I had a neighbor who retired from a federal government job that he worked in for 40 years.
It was classified as agricultural assistance to third world nations. This guy was a real Forest Gump. He couldn’t grow a tomato plant, I swear. I suspect that he was hired to fill an official position just to justify the payroll deposits that were paid into the Ghost agency each year.
