Toyota outsold General Motors in 2021 to end 90-year streak

Toyota is on top.

The world’s largest automaker by volume outsold General Motors in the United States in 2021, becoming the first to do so since 1931.

Toyota delivered 2.332 million cars to GM’s 2.218 million in a year that saw the automotive industry hampered by supply chain shortages that Toyota navigated better than most, increasing its U.S. sales by 10.4% compared to 2020, while GM’s were down 12.9%.

Ford reports on Wednesday, but had delivered only 1,651,481 vehicles through November and will finish the year in third place.

“Thanks to our phenomenal dealers and world-class purchasing and manufacturing teams, our inventory continues to improve and we’re preparing to introduce 21 all-new, refreshed or special edition vehicles in 2022,” Toyota senior vice president Jack Hollis said in a press release.

Shares of Toyota and GM were up on the news as both reported improving inventory going into 2022, with GM spokesman Jim Cain telling Reuters the automaker expects sales to recover in 2022.

“I wouldn’t rush out if I were (Toyota), and get a ‘We’re No. 1’ tattoo,” he said.

  1. I might consider a Toyota if it could pull a 40-foot Toy Hauler RV. I had an FJ Cruiser, the suspension was so stiff it beat the crap out of me. Traded it for a Dodge Ram that got better mileage.

    Until then, nah.

  2. I guess that annoying ‘Toyota lady’ on TV is doing something right…

But I remember those tiny “toy cars” from the ’60’s: midget Toyota’s and Datsun’s. The first time we saw one, we’d say, “What the heck is THAT? It looks like a toy car, Dad!”

    Look at ’em now.

  3. I don’t need a full sized truck, just something to get out to the hunt club and to Home Despot. I bought my first Toyota pickup in ’93. I still have it; although it’s built up as an almost strictly off-roader, it still runs great. I bought my Tacoma in 2016. I’ll probably have in in ’36. Toyotas last. Driving my ‘Yota for 22 years saved me about $60-90,K. If I had bought Fords or Chevys, I would have probably had to buy 3 trucks in the interceding years. Both were made in the USA, but to Toyota standards.

  4. What took so long?

Their product is of higher quality.

My Tundra has over 300,000 miles on it. My mechanic says it should give me 500,000 before it’s toast.

I love free market competition because the consumer always wins and so does the innovator that brings it to the market.

  5. I can’t afford to own GM anymore.
Gaskets. alternators, Trim, Air Cond, Electronic problems, soft breaks.

Switched to Subaru 2014, No issues. Gas, Oil Changes, 1 battery 1 set of brakes and never once dead in the driveway.

Ford is making a Ton of sales with the Van Fleet sales of Transit to all the Amazon & other delivery contractors.

The F-150 esp with the V-8s are absolutely fantastic. Up here they start about $6,000 less than Toyota.

  6. Automakers in the US have abandoned the sedan that’s why and in particular the gas powered sedan. Toyota has had the #1 or #2 (Honda) best selling sedan in the country for a long time. If you want a sedan without the nonsense of electric, where ya gonna go?

Tundras are great but I hear they are going to stop production of V-8’s. I would love to add one to our fleet but the F-150’s are still running perfect. 2011 & 2014s

I Toyota develops a Full Size van soon.

  8. all I know, empirically, is we have a local Toyota/Chevy dealer in town. the Toyota lot is practically bare. a few various white cars & a few trucks & no SUVs. Chevy lot has lots of cars & trucks (Chevy/GM trucks have always been notorious rust buckets)

got a Camry from the same local dealer in 2003. gave it to one of my granddaughters in her senior year in high school. she drove it through her first 2 years of college until she traded it in for a RAV4 back in July.

bought a 96 Toyota Tacoma (5-speed, 4×4) from my son. drove it for 265k miles until a deer decided to redecorate my front grill during a snowstorm & the truck ended up on its side. the insurance co. totaled it out. bought a used Tacoma for the $4k the insurance co. gave me (w/ another $4k) & drove that on for another 260k until I traded it in on a new (2015) RAV4 … still got it, running fine … same tires, same battery, same belts. nothing but normal service … knock on wood.

bought a 64 Toyota ‘3-door’ hatchback 3-speed Corolla, a real POS, back in ’74 for $500 so She Who Must Be Obeyed could get to her first job in our other car (a POS Ford LTD). drove that thing to various construction sites from Baltimore to Frederick MD to Loudon Co. to Woodbridge, Manassas, Tysons Corner VA to various DC sites to Gaithersburg & Rockville & Largo & Clinton & Oxen Hill MD & dozens of others in the greater DC/Baltimore area. had a bad industrial construction accident in ’76 that put me out of work for over 6 months. when I started to get better, I decided to tune up the POS … great mechanic that I am, it never ran well again …. couldn’t sell it … so I junked it. best POS I ever had
