CNN boss Jeff Zucker shocked the media world Wednesday by announcing he is resigning from CNN, the company that he’s led since 2013, because of a relationship with a longtime senior colleague that he failed to disclose.
Why it matters: Zucker is one of the most powerful executives in the industry and was a driving force behind CNN’s new push into digital subscriptions.
Details: In a note to staff tweeted by senior media correspondent Brian Stelter, Zucker said that as a part of CNN’s investigation into Chris Cuomo last year, he was asked about a consensual relationship with a colleague, someone he has worked with for more than 20 years.
- “I acknowledged the relationship evolved in recent years. I was required to disclose it when it began and I didn’t. I was wrong. As a result, I am resigning today.
- CNN did not immediately return a request for comment.
Between the lines: Zucker’s tenure at CNN has been debated among media insiders for years. It was reported that he was eyeing an exit from CNN last year. It was unclear what he role would be after WarnerMedia’s merger with discovery closes this year.
Too bad, and just when things there were going so well.

Zucker was going to be canned anyway for new owners AT&T for running the network into the ground. These “sudden” resignations are like corrupt politicians mysteriously resigning to “spend more time with their families”, when they only work half the year.

He as the senior, or more powerful employee, had the duty to report the relationship. The underling has no such obligation. I have always maintained that any involvement in personal relationships with other employees is grounds to vamoos everyone involved. I had a guy working for me once who was warned, when my boss came and told me that I had to schedule him around the her he was involved with after the relationship went south I said: Nothing doing. If you want to can one, can them both I don’t care, but I am not going to have it affect the other guys who work under me period. And, he was my favorite of all the guys who worked under me.
A gal shopping the pussy around for favors is as much as a problem in the workplace as a guy who is looking for sexual favors for preferential treatment. I don’t have any use for either.
