  1. Yep… Step down transformer for bell ringer and the hose was connected to a pressure switch that made the bell ring when a car ran over it. Masterpiece of ancient technology.

  2. If you drove the length of the hose slowly with one tire it would keep ringing.

  3. I also miss the green Dino footprints at the Sinclair stations.

That and leaded gas smelled so good I wanted to work at a gas station.

Where are those Texaco toy cars and trucks, too?

I remember jumping on the hoses too and my Mom yelling at me to stop. I also remember jumping on the mats that triggered the automatic doors at the grocery store. Mom yelled there too.

  5. @Jethro “… where the Chinese space scrap struck the moon”

I don’t understand how, whatever it was, having been launched from the earth and just aimlessly wandering, it impacted the ‘back side of the moon.’
That is the face of the moon that never faces earth. Something about that doesn’t make sense to me.

  6. Not braggin’ but Arizona and Utah still has Sinclair and our drive through liquor stores use those gas station hose bell ringy things.

Also, people have open burn piles. Whole state smells like Mexico in the autumn.

  7. True Confession: I was a Teenage Pump Jockey

most fun job I ever had. pumping Ethyl @ 29 cents a gallon. ‘fill ‘er up?’, wash the windows (especially for the college girls from U of MD just a mile up the road; almost wore out some of those windshields checking out the latest fad – miniskirts! yow!), check the oil, hand out S&H Green Stamps, & w/ a purchase of 8 gallons or more, you got a free steak knife

I was 5th of 5 kids. I learned everything from my siblings
She always referred to me as “her baby”…all the way up until the day she died at 100 years old.

  9. @ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ –

I was a teenage pump jockey too. Gas was 25 cents a gallon and we would wash the windshields and check the oil. The station was right down the road from my High School, so there were lots of parties that took place at that place. Fun times.

  10. like LuvntheBIGsites said: primary side of txformer looks to be insulated so prob 125 VAC. Secondary side not insulated, so likely low voltage AC, i’m guessing 24 +/- VAC. Bell would be expecting AC. Hose would close the switch via air pressure in the enclose on the right, Bell would ring. Could be a rectifier in there too. If so, you would get one ding only when activated as VDC would not toggle the bell. Front tire then back tire gives you ding ding.
