The voice behind the massive 1975 hit “Convoy” has died. C.W. McCall passed away on Friday at 93 after a cancer battle. McCall, real name Bill Fries, devised his persona as an Omaha advertising whiz in 1973 for a spot for Old Home Bread.

According to Deadline, the ad won a Clio and led to McCall breaking on his own as an “outlaw trucker.” On top of his success with “Convoy,” the singer also had hits from 1974 through 1978, including “Old Home Filler-Up an’ Keep On-a-Truckin’ Cafe,” “Wolf Creek Pass,” “Classified,” and “Roses for Mama.” More

  1. The 55 speed limit happened all at once? What was it before? Also, how did people react? I know the Sammy Hagar song, but that came out in the 80’s. This article says it happened in 1973.

  2. Saw him in concert at the movie theater in Ouray, Co, ’76 or thereabouts. Great show, lotsa fun. He ducked into the wimmin’s room afterwards to dodge the autograph hounds – Sis was already in there… got his autograph!

    Thank you and rest well.

Willy, I didn’t even know daylight savings started at the same time as the 55 mph.

    I can drive a stick. I know what a CB is……..and that’s about it.

  6. So what happened to all the CBs?

Also, who would you talk to? CBs don’t have huge ranges.

Just another bit of history trivia that’s meaningless to you older people but is endlessly fascinating to us young hotties.

Like the gong show guy who was a CIA contract killer? Really?

Tell me more of bell bottomed America.

55 was the result of the first “gas crisis” if memory serves.
So was the daylight savings time bullshit.
Lines at gas stations, odd and even days … killings … what a mess.
