Washington State to preserve 10,000 forest acres as carbon reserve

KOMO

SEATTLE — Washington Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz says the state has launched a new program to save 10,000 acres of forest land as a carbon reserve.

The Seattle Times reported the state will lease the trees as carbon credits to emitters of greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

In the first 10 years, the DNR hopes to sell 900,000 credits reducing carbon emissions to the atmosphere by the equivalent of 2 billion vehicle miles traveled.

Money from the leases will compensate beneficiaries of state trust lands, including the school construction fund. A total of 3,750 acres is being set aside now.

The program is launching with protection of forests in Whatcom, Thurston, King and Grays Harbor counties.

  1. I’ve got quite a few trees, I think I’ll set myself up as an administrator of carbon credits. I’ll give my wife and myself a salary and whatever is left I’ll use to plant more trees. I can’t believe I haven’t thought of this before.

  2. Meanwhile, 1/2 million acres of PNW forests burn to the ground due to poor management brought on to appease the Sierra club and other commie groups pretending to be environmentalists.

  3. Green House Gas/AGW is bunk. Last year (2021) was the second coldest winter in the Antarctic on record for the past 150 years of recorded weather. It’s impossible for Global Warming to cause both warming and record cold at the same time. The global climate cycles. That’s it. It’s a natural event.

Second point: The agricultural corn crop in the USA, that stretch’s from the west coast to the east coast, produces more oxygen annually than the Amazon Rain Forest does in the same amount of time.

AGW is a political game. It’s all about control.

  4. Wow! Buying Carbon Credits on forest land that’s going to be there anyway. What, if I DON’T buy the credits the forest ISN’T going to absorb CO2 and emit O2? No thanks, I’ll pass on the tax.

  5. In 1990 I personally called out the Spotted Owl Controversy for what it obviously was. Namely a move by the Progressive Movement to force hard working fiercely independent multigenerational logging families into bankruptcy and onto the Government dole. The transparently obvious goal being to get these people on the Democrat Gravy Train. There was nothing the least bit legitimate about the claims being made and evidence of that was everywhere. From The Oprah featuring the stories to the same talking points being played off against hand selected “opposition” on every nightly news broadcast in the metropolitan Northwest as well as the Seattle & Tacoma papers.

Tis is nothing but more of the same. It is out of the same playbook as the attack on farming and ranching families who lack the resources to fight back. The objective being to make the land available to conglomerates who pay off politicians in various ways.

  6. It is all such BS. If they fail to sell the Global Warming theory, they can’t sell carbon credits. Selling carbon credit doesn’t mean the company is going to pollute less, just feel better about polluting. It also ads to the price of whatever their product is. Who suffers, the little guy.
When the Energy Star program was enacted, there was very few products made in America that were Energy Star rated. Most came from China.
ENERGY STAR is a money funnel for EPA and DOE.
The EU is switching coal power plants to “Organic Mass” (wood pellets), where do most of the pellets come from, USA.
Again, it is all such BS.

  7. I thought grass worked better at trapping carbon.

Also, when did the Sierra club go gay? I first heard about it in the early 80’s when some dude who was pals with our scoutmaster gave us a talk on hiking preparedness that devolved into a tirade against the Sierra club. Told my pops about it, he just nodded in agreement.

All I know is it was founded by some old timey guy. Abraham…..Hitler or something. It was supposed to maintain trails. Preserve nature in places no one ever goes to so it seems like nature is doin’ just fine….but whatever.

Just for historical accuracy, when did the Sierra club go nutso bananas?

  8. The state government here is, without question, the whackiest bunch of bureaucrats I’ve ever had the misfortune of living with. Are there crazier states? Undoubtedly, but I’ve never lived anywhere like this place and been able to observe these nutz like I have in WA.

  9. Remember when they found a family of Spotted owls with a nest inside a K Mart sign down in Southern Oregon back in the 90’s and the owls were doing perfectly fine. Most people forget that or they never paid attention because of all the fearmongering from the animal rights wacko’s.
