You know, Jack Black has a fantastic voice, but he likes to bring a comedic touch of bombasticness to his vocals. It’s almost like a defense mechanism, like he doesn’t want to be too vulnerable and set himself up for ridicule.
The guy can sing.

He really does have talent and I think you’re right about why he clowns around with it.
As for the tempo of the song, it’s right on the edge of too fast for me. There was a cover band playing at the sailing club one Saturday so long ago and they just played the songs too quickly. I found it irritating. Couldn’t enjoy the music. This Tommy rendition is flirting with that range of speed.
Maybe the band at the club thought they’re showing off or something. I dunno, but I wouldn’t hire them for anything, that’s for sure.

Brad, that was my first thought also. If a movie is ever made about Meatloaf then the star should be played by Jack Black.

Jack Black has a way of pulling you. I enjoyed that, I would have liked to see him do “Pinball Wizard” all the way through.
