Republican flips seat in Texas that was a 100 year stronghold for the left

Oh, they must hate this one.

Rising Republican star Mayra Flores beat out Democratic challenger Dan Sanchez on Tuesday in a special election to finish Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela’s current term in South Texas, a competitive congressional seat the GOP believes it can flip for good in November.

The 34th Congressional District race was seen as a gauge of Republicans’ growing popularity in traditionally Democratic South Texas. House Republicans in 2020 did far better than expected with Latino voters there than in previous cycles.

The special election was triggered after Vela accepted a position with Akin Gump, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying and law firm. Prior to his resignation, Vela announced he would not be seeking reelection to the seat he had held since 2013.

Tuesday’s winner will finish Vela’s term, which ends in January. Despite the winner only having about six months in Congress, Republicans wanted to score an early win ahead of November’s matchup, which will determine which candidate will represent the Lone Star State’s neighboring 34th District for a full two-year term.

  1. Damn! Why can’t I get to vote for a nice looking, conservative lady. The incumbent in my district is the pencil neck geek, Derick Kilmer. A toe the party line donkey. There is almost no way he loses here.

  2. “… formation of the Hispanic Leadership Trust …”

Identity politics? Or just good common sense?
“Hispanic” is one of those made-up words that implies pan-Iberian-ism but seems to mean something different for each who employs it.

I hope she doesn’t “grow” in office.

  3. OH god, I hate that fucking Kilmer. The newsletter I get from him sets me off every GD time I read it. Full of lies and bullshit. I used to get a form letter response to any questions but I guess my tone in the last few missives don’t even warrant that. I thought the Peninsula was some what conservative, I sure don’t run across that many REgressives.

Just on the other side of Seattle Joe Kent is running and he’s a winner. At least there’s someone in the state I can kick a few bucks on occasion to because it sure as fuck ain’t Kilmer.

    “Don’t know the reason
    Stayed here all season
Nothing to show but this brand new tattoo
    But it’s a real beauty
    A Mexican cutie
How it got here, I haven’t a clue”
