The couple were told parking in front of their house was illegal, despite the fact they’d been parking there for nearly 40 years.SAN FRANCISCO — It seemed so unfair. They’d been using their carpad for decades – when suddenly the city said it’s illegal. Not only that, they were threatened with a $1,500 fine – a huge penalty even for San Francisco. The only way out? Go back into San Francisco history.

Parking in San Francisco is a difficult part of life here. You find a spot… but get a ticket anyway.

For Judy and Ed Craine it seems especially unfair.

“We always use the carport,” said Judy.

“Parked in that driveway every day and every night,” confirmed Ed.

They live on a steep hill where parking can be a gravity-defying challenge.

But they could slip into their driveway and park on their carpad, which they’d been doing every day for the past 36 years.

But not anymore.

  1. A productive tax payer cannot park his car on his property without risking a steep fine but a homeless drug addict can park his ass in front of any property he chooses and gets clean needles, free food and and medical care with no harassment from city fathers. Got it!

  2. Why anyone with a functioning central nervous systems chooses to live anywhere in California is a mystery with no solution. California would be great again if it were possible to get rid of Californians.

  10. “Anonymous complaint” my eye! It’s probably happening all across the city. A nickel and dime scheme someone probably got an “Atta Boy” for searching out in the city code. If we had investigative journalists, I’m sure they’d find the internal memo. Why else would the city of SF so vigorously deny the homeowner’s evidence of historic use, unless they had their own dog in the fight?

    However…

    When we bought our home in 1979, everyone on our street pulled their cars halfway onto the sidewalks in order for drivers to have plenty of room on our narrow street. No one ever complained because everyone did it. Additionally, Queen Anne hill had few stop signs because everyone knew to slow down as they neared intersections and sidestreet drivers knew they needed to yield to those on the bigger arterials. But after the crush of CA immigrants during the late 80’s and into the 90’s (big tech), all of sudden there were complaints about everything! And most of the intersections were posted with the blight of stop signs. “No Parking” signs sprang up like rows of street trees, too! And guess what? The same CA complainers are the ones who routinely run all those big, ugly Stop signs and park right next to the No Parking signs.
