@Say what? — Taking your probably rhetorical question literally, just make sure that the threatening “something” has an object in its hand that you can believably claim looked like a lethal weapon.
It used to be that some folks carried a throw-down weapon of some kind to (ahem) donate to the cause, but in today’s world of ubiquitous security and mobile phone cameras that would be a Very Bad Idea.

The bums know they have you captive while you’re filling up. When you pull into an unfamiliar gas station, look around for NO LOITERING signs. That means there are likely to be “loiterers”. Whom you will probably notice off to the side of the building, waiting for somebody to pull up to the pump farthest from the building. I try to get all my gas at Costco, where there is an attendant and usually lots of people who have no truck with panhandlers.

I’ve been carrying a gun in Cali for 20 years plus. And I’ll admit at first it was something of a novelty. Especially in our little ultra conservative oasis. It’s not a novelty anymore and hasn’t been for a long time. It’s one murder after another. Daily. And occasionally we get dirt bags coming up from Sac County to rob, murder and rape rich whitey in our county.
Our Sheriffs department has started issuing their own ID cards for ccws. On renewal they will ask you if you volunteer to be on a list of people the Sheriffs office can deputize should they feel the need. They did it two summers ago when BLM came to town.
Things are getting more dangerous nation wide. But in the Retard run states it’s out of control. A lot of crime does not make it to the news. Situational awareness is paramount for staying alive.

It’s getting to the point where we need to provide housing for the homeless, in the form of prisons dedicated strictly to the homeless. If they can demonstrate the ability to live in society as a productive citizen, then they are free to leave. But while they are living in their “housing” they will be drug tested randomly, with a failed test resulting in a transfer to a penal institution. Other conditions that will insure both compassion and compliance will need to be devised, but this idea is a start.
I guaran-damn-tee you that the prospect of prison as their “home” will be a huge deterrence to choosing a homeless lifestyle.
