Greenwood, Indiana, police chief Jim Ison described the 22-year-old who shot and killed a mall attacker as the “hero of the day.”
Reuters quoted Ison saying, “The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began.”
Breitbart News reported that a suspect opened fire in the Greenwood Park Mall food court around 6 p.m.
The attacker was able to kill three people before the 22-year-old armed citizen intervened, shooting the attacker dead.
The Associated Press reports that the attacker came into the mall with “a rifle and several magazines of ammunition” and began shooting.
Chief Ison indicated the 22-year-old who killed the attacker was from Bartholomew County and “was legally carrying a firearm.”
@JewishResister — I don’t think so. I’m not familiar with Indiana specifically, but in general if you carry a firearm onto private property that has a “no firearms” sign, you might be guilty of trespass but only if you refuse to leave when requested by the owner or his agent.
There ARE specific prohibited places mentioned in most state laws, and in fed law. E.G. courthouses, police stations, airport terminals. Penalties are different (more severe) there when compared to ordinary private property.
So the Police Chief says the Samaritan ” was legally carrying a firearm”, but Jewish Ginger Resister says he “illegally brought in a loaded firearm” based on the Mall’s rules. I wonder whose opinion is more relevant?

Exactly, same legal standard as “No shoes, No shirt, No service”. The property owner can post every sign in the world but cannot prohibit a single action by the consumer. They can only deny you service and ask you to leave the premises.

“No Firearm” signs in Indiana do not have the force of law unless they are posted on property that is specifically mentioned in State Law as being off limits. However, as a possessor with a real property interest, a retailer, has the right to limit, and qualify the right to enter the property, subject to not carrying a handgun. It would be improper to enter, and the licensee would be subject to ejection for possession of a handgun thereat. Failure to leave once requested would subject the licensee to arrest for criminal trespass.

My understanding of Texas law is that if you are in possession of a firearm against the posted wishes of the property owner and you stop a mass shooter or similar crime, the government simply says “I don’t see a problem here,” assuming that no one would have been any the wiser that you had the weapon before you used it to stop the bad guy.

I live about an hour from Greenwood, IN. Indiana is a Constitutional carry state, just started on July 1 this year. Now, what would all of these anti-second amendment crowd do in a similar situation? They would be screaming for the cops or a good guy with a gun to save their liberal asses, gun free zone or not. Indiana is typically a red state, but our local media(Indianapolis) are typical liberal. They have released the picture of the young man who killed the shooter & the name(only) of the shooter. Seems strange, but it is because they are scouring his social media for anything that makes him a Trumper or republican, then they can run with it. If he isn’t, the story will fade out in a day or two. This is how stupid our media in this state are, on the radio news today the press conference was held with the latest. A “reporter” asked the chief of the Greenwood police this gem, “what do you think would have happened if the shooter had come in by another entrance”? The chief responded with “we don’t do conjecture”. Top 5 of the dumbest question ever.
In Indiana, malls, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. can put up all the no firearms allowed signs they want. CCW holders know that the signs carry no rule of law and the police are not allowed to enforce the stupid signs. In some states, the property owner has the right to restrict firearms on their property, but not Indiana.
