NYP: Niagara Falls has been transformed into a partially frozen winter wonderland thanks to the recent wave of sub-zero temperatures gripping the region.
The magical scene was captured in a series of breathtaking photographs that show frozen mist and sheets of ice blanketing parts of the iconic tourist destination at the border of New York state and Ontario, Canada.
The icy spectacle formed as winter weather blasted the Northeast over the weekend, bringing frigid temperatures and a deadly blizzard to Buffalo, New York — roughly 25 miles south of Niagara Falls.
But while parts of the falls were frozen, they almost never freeze completely due to the sheer volume of the water that gushes over — combined with the constant movement of the raging liquid. MORE

That happens all the time on Lake Superior.
I haven’t the slightest idea why anyone would choose to live in such a place. Visit during summer and fall maybe. But winter there? The answer is HELL NO.
The water flow is throttled up and down throughout the day and night. late at night you can see the difference in flow.
I’ve been to Horseshoe Falls in Munising, Mi in the winter where the falls freeze up and you can walk behind them.
If you’re ever near there in the winter it’s a great experience and a not difficult trek to the falls.
Been to the Canadian side in the summer.

I used to fish below the falls where the cable car crosses.
Huron you are correct the water level does go up and down.
South of the falls where i fished a two three foot level change could occur within several hours.
The Hydro electric plant controls the flow.
I’ve seen photos of it more frozen over than that from 100 years ago.
