Site Note: Someone Spoofed Tony R’s Name

There is zero tolerance for that. They seemed to be a fellow patriot, according to their past comments. But, they have been banned. It’s common sense that this will not be tolerated.

  1. It’s either a compliment or an act of desperation, or maybe both? Tony R is one of the more astute commenters here. (Haven’t seen the evidence yet, so pardon my ignorance.)

  3. Spoofing deserves banning.
Recently I was falsely accused of doing just that.
Damn near just as bad if you ask me…
Fortunately the accuser has very little credibility.

  4. Just came to ask when you’re going to block “Doc John”, and behold! there’s one of “his” annoying spams.

  5. Similar problem with spammers in the email world. We deal with them using an “DNSRBL”. When you detect a IP address submitting spam, it goes into an database, and some rules applied (prior reputation, geolocation, etc…) and then published as a fake DNS record. Example: Spammer at 1.2.3.4 gets caught and tossed in the DB, gets submitted to the DNSRBL. The DNSRBL then publishes a TXT record in a zone map with the octets reversed.
    So the 1.2.3.4 becomes:
    4.3.2.1.rbl.kali-refugee.net IN TXT “Spammer ”

DNS lookups are relatively cheap, and easy to insert in the process. The SMTP server then query’s this map when someone tried to send email. Any positive hit for the reversed octet record results in a rejection. The neat thing is the process lends itself to aggregation. So groups of mail servers band together and share an RBL and help each other. There’s several public RBL’s for email, SpamHaus, SORBS, etc…

Business opportunity for BFH to make one for news discussion sites like this. 🙂

  7. I see that on some other sites too. It is only a matter of time for that to happen, unless you’d consider a commenting system that verifies/authenticates, but even that might also happen.
It is not an easy job, running such a web site and allowing relaxed commenting system.
I appreciate all you who are involved in running iotw.
