Georgia Senate votes against splitting neighborhood off from Atlanta

Just The News: The Georgia Senate on Thursday voted against a proposal that would have broken away an Atlanta neighborhood to form a new city.

The chamber voted 23-33 against forming Buckhead City out of the state capital’s northernmost neighborhood.

Proponents of creating the new city cited mounting crime in Atlanta and a desire to manage their own police form to address the issue. The plan had the support of Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R, who on Monday tweeted that “[a] vote against Buckhead city is a vote FOR crime. A vote for Buckhead city is a vote FOR freedom.”

Atlanta Democratic Mayor Andre Dickens celebrated the movement’s failure.

“Atlanta is one city, with one bright future,” he said in a statement. “I am thankful to the bipartisan majority of the Georgia Senate who voted to reject SB 114. I am grateful to the large number of Atlantans—from parents to businesses to educational leaders—who stood up and spoke with a united voice for a united city.” MORE

  1. I’m not familiar with Atlanta, but let me guess…Buckhead is relatively affluent, low crime, and white, and is tired of seeing their tax dollars sucked off to subsidize the high crime “chocolate city” of Atlanta. Is that about right?

  2. We might as well allow abusive husbands to vote against their wives from getting a divorce.

Back in the ‘90’s, West Seattle wanted to have a vote to break away from the City of Seattle. That would not be allowed unless the rest of the city got to be part of the vote and the measure passed. Of course you know it wouldn’t.

“Arm up Buckhead. Nobody is coming to save you.”

…the ONE thing that the Atlanta PD WILL be dispatched to en masse will be any attempt of the citizens to protect themselves from the Democrat brown shirts. You can bet your butt they WILL be there toot sweet with the FBI in tow to protect the lawless from the law-abiding.

  4. It’s getting very close to a time where people who just want to live their lives in peace and be left alone will have no other option but to “take matter into their own hands”. It seems that liberal politicians desire chaos, criminality and anarchy. There are those who will cower in fear and accept their fate but even a docile animal will become dangerous when cornered. If the authorities refuse to enforce law and order it can be accomplished by other means. People are beginning to question just what “government” provides for all their taxes. Not much positive has come from government in a very long time. What the hell are they doing besides collecting other peoples money and enriching themselves. Productive people in Atlanta and Buckhead derive little of substance from their “betters”.

  5. Tony R, it is the most affluent area in Georgia, posibly the whole South. The Governor’s mansion is smack dab in the middle. I grew up a mile away in Dekalb County, other side of the tracks, literally. Now my old neighborhood is gentrified, and it is part of the city of Brookhaven, which is just north of Buckhead. But the MARTA train runs through, so there’s still shooting and looting anyway. Buckhead is screwed no matter what. And just wait until Tank Abrams gets in the Governor’s mansion.

My daughter just graduated from college, and she’s got a job and an apartment in Buckhead now, a mile from where I grew up. I worry about her, but you can’t tell them anything. It’s not what it was forty years ago. Ever since the train came.
