Marine Corps Deemphasizing Sniper Training

Scout snipers have been part of the Marine Corps since World War II.

The Marine Corps is scrapping its scout sniper program and will soon house its snipers under reconnaissance, rather than infantry, battalions.

Instead of scout sniper platoons, infantry battalions will have scout platoons, an message sent to the fleet from the Corps’ Plans, Policies and Operations department on Tuesday said. The message called for the transition to happen immediately. Additional

  1. Back in the day, after boot camp (Parris Island for me), everyone went through ITR (Infantry Training Regiment) at Camp Geiger for weapons and tactics training. It was actually a great time: machine guns, hand grenades, grenade launchers, flame throwers, plastic explosives, John Wayne courses, night fire, flare training, compass training, gas mask training (fun until the masks came off), and more! EVERY Marine at that time had a primary MOS of 0311, Rifleman. Apparently it’s different now. In boot camp, we qualified at the rifle range using M14s at various yardages with the final being 500 yards from the prone position with open iron sights. We were all pretty much snipers at that time. Yeah, we used our testosterone freely!

  2. Wait.. So I’m better equipped and able than the Marine corps?

Considering I out-shot my #1 son who was tops in his marine platoon, I think they are making a severe mistake.

The militia lives and will survive.

Don’t push it, bitches. You’re not going to like the results. There are many better than me not in your ranks.

  3. @ Lurker. I went through PI in 1990, was in boot camp during Christmas, we ate sand for Christmas dinner. The time at Geiger was called BWT (basic warrior training) at that time. We didn’t get to play with flame throwers. My favorite was the MK-19. Hard to believe it was 30+ years ago, if you were using M14s, your experience was long before mine. Semper Fi

  4. The TRUTH what is going on here? — The Marine Corps is being turned into an expendable force of rocket-firing troops who are not expected to live past the first day of battle. First they took their tanks. Now their snipers. Next their helmets!

  5. Substituting Diaper Changing training, to take care of Buttigig’s and other leftist’s babies?

Or perhaps umbrella holding, as their President salutes with a cup in his hands!

  6. Being assigned to Marine Recon or Marine Raiders, the snipers will be intensely trained in many other disciplines, as well as, honing their skill as scout snipers.
The most skilled snipers will be intensely Special Forces trained, not ratholed in a Battalion of 750 Marines.
Marine Recon and Raiders are the most skilled, trained and disciplined of the Marine Corps equal to all Special Forces personnel in the US Military. The Best of the Best.

  8. Snipers must not be a money making enterprise, compared to some other piece of equipment which is going to be foisted on the Marines, in tandem with the new organizational change, by the MIC. I don’t know what that hardware is, but I have no doubt that expensive, redundant, useless and in the pipeline.

  9. My late uncle, my dad’s next older brother was an Army paratrooper and sniper at the end of World War 2. Fortunately for him he never was sent to Europe, but he did occupation duty in Japan after the war was over. He was an excellent marksman and skilled hunter having grown up in the mountains of N. Idaho. During occupation duty he was able to put some meat on the table for Japanese citizens since the Japs couldn’t own guns. My dad tells me the same story when he was in the AF and stationed in Germany from 1948-50, that the GI’s would regularly hunt and provide meat from feral hogs and other critters in the woods of Germany to the German people since they also couldn’t own guns. Removing snipers from the Marines is not a good idea and will take a major advantage away for fighting wars against our enemies in the future. Oh well, there’s always guerilla warfare like the Minutemen and militia did in the American Revolution to fight for freedom. And there are a lot of American hunters and sportsman (and veterans) who would be very good at that if needed.

  10. They are de-fanging the Marines – the only fiercely patriotic force – because when martial law comes, the swamp does not want loyal opposition. When fighting with China comes over Taiwan, the Marines (now mere sacrificial rocket launchers) will be wiped out. Swamp fascists are as cold blooded as any fascists.
