I do read comments, and I do retain.. lol.
So, when I was in a store I figured I would try it.
HERESY!!!! No way. I disagree. There was nothing “gingery” about it and to me tasted like cotton candy.
If you’re going to do ginger ale, do ginger.
Currently, my favorite is Canada Dry Bold.
But, also, I am one of the few people I know who likes Tamarind soda. So, take what I say with a grain of salt.
#1 is ginger beer
#2 is ginger ale (cotton club or schwepp’s
Vernor’s always tasted kinda nasty to me.
Huh. I also heard that Vernors was the best ginger ale. From what I remember, there’s no ginger in it… It sucks.
Bundaberg (Australia) is the best readily available ginger ‘beer’ in my point of view. Jones ginger ale is quite good as well.
However, I like ‘hammer’ ginger flavor and make my own ginger frozen custard and egg nog (frozen custard’s base is egg nog, for the most part) I use ginger root – frozen so it grates easily.
For those of us that grew up in the Detroit area, Vernors was IT. Later in life, I discovered Canada Dry GA and never went back to Vernors. Today I learned that CD has a bold version. Might have to give that a try if I can find it in a smaller bottle or can and not that large size.
What does Tamarind taste like? I knew not of the Jarritos brand until we moved to SW Florida.
To me Canada Dry was the water they used to wash the Vernor’s glasses.
I’m not a ginger ale snob, Canada Dry tastes good to me.
I grew up on Vernors ginger ale and loved it. When I moved from MI I gave up drinking ginger ale altogether. I quit all carbonated beverages a few years ago, but Canada Dry Bold has peaked my interest.
Goya ginger beer.
Northern Neck is the best. It may be regional. Virginia.
I had Vernors a few times when I was young; my father liked it. The flavor was different but I liked it. I haven’t seen it around these parts in years, I thought they had gone out of business.
I quit buying soda 12 years ago, but I used to like Polar ginger ale and dry orange. I’ll have a root beer once in a while when I’m out to eat.
Apparently Northern Neck, which was purchased by Coca Cola a few years back, was shut down during the pandemic. Shame.
This looks interesting though.

I lived in MI and my Dad used to work in Detroit and brought cases of Vernors home onnthe weekends. Hated it! I think cause I always pictured ginger ale to taste like 7 Up and Vernors did not AT ALL!
I’m from northern Michigan and was raised on Vernors. I still like it, but when we left the UP in the late 60s, it was almost impossible to get Vernors outside Michigan. I prefer Canada Dry now.
True Michiganders don’t drink ginger ale ss a beverage, but as a medicinal supplement. Nothing cures an upset tummy quicker. Used it during chemo to chase away the upsets.
I like Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Vernons is horrid. Another soft drink I detest is Fresca.
Ginger is a good thing to eat or drink for an upset stomach. People who take cruises eat raw ginger or eat the gin-gins. Green apples will do the same.
If you’re not adding alcohol to it, it doesn’t really matter…
PHenry
Shame they don’t make Northern Neck Ginger ale any more. It was dropped by Coca Cola in 2020.
I’m a fan of Canada Dry Cranberry Ginger Ale now.
Goslings ginger beer. Very flavor-full!
If you’re going to drink ginger ale drink the best,Blenheim Ginger Ale . Be careful with #5 though it will light you up.
Vernors was used for me as a medicine as a child!
For upset stomach
maybe it used to have ginger in it?
Does Schweppes still make Bitter Lemon? Used to live that stuff, now I can only find their tonic water.
I’ve always been a fan of Ginger Ale, but I shore wouldn’t have passed up a chance for some Mary Ann Ale….
Faygo Rock’n’Rye is another love it or hate it Michigan staple.
Speaking of Michigan favorites, don’t forget Stroh’s Beer. Proudly brewed from the waters of the Detroit River.
I had a ginger beer on that stopover place between vegas and california (with all the different beverages.) It would burn your eyebrow hair.
I think, though, for a mass-produced, non-craft ginger ale at a reasonable price, Canada Dry Bold is pretty damn good.
What does tamarind flavor soda taste like?
Tamarind flavored soda is a mix of sweet and sour, tangy and tart with great carbonation. The use of the Tamarind fruit in the soda ensures an authentic, one-of-a-kind, natural flavor derived from the pulp. Not only has it got a wonderful earthy aftertaste, but it’s also healthy with no artificial sweeteners.
Growing up in Michigan, it was always Vernors. When you first open the bottle and raise it for the first sip, DO NOT inhale! You will be coughing for 20 minutes.
No other ginger ale will be as good for me. Just like Jay’s potato chips are the best.
I’m drinking a Vernors right now as a matter of fact!
Nothing wrong with Canada Dry either, but I like the taste of Vernors.
I remember potato chips in the big steel cans. Probably were Jay’s. My mind either didn’t catalog that or it dropped it to make room for something newer.
I truly H8 Vernors. (WAY TOO Sweet for me)
Canuckistan Dry is Good.
By far, I prefer Schweppes. No Idea if it is sold in the USA.
(Cadbury Schweppes – England)
Never had a Yuengling till we moved down here. We didn’t have it in Michigan. I’m not a big beer drinker, actually not much of a drinker at all, but I do like Yuengling.
I remember chips in a can, they were called Charles Chips. A small delivery truck would deliver them to you door. And Strohs Beer, didn’t they used to market that in a wide mouth bottle? I can’t drink fast enough out of a regular bottle, gimme one of them wide-necks!
I too remember the coughing spasms from inhaling Vernor’s! It still tastes the best IMO.
Vernor’s was ginger ale. Period.
And Stroh’s was beer. Also period.
1950’s SE Michigan.
OK, Vernor’s doesn’t even call itself “ginger ale”, It calls itself a “ginger drink”. That said, I look for it especially when returning to Michigan. Can’t get it here. If you want to try an unusual ginger ale, try Ale 8 One out of Winchester, KY. A bit odd, but not bad.
Fifties Flashback
New Era Potato Chips. They came in a large tin.
The label read “The Alkaline Food”
I read that as the Al Kaline food.
Al Kaline was the Tigers’ power hitter of the time.
I checked the labels on all brands of Ginger Ale sold at my grocery store.
None listed ginger as an ingredient.
Except Canada Dry: which contains “less than 2% ginger.”
Canada Dry Ginger Ale is piss water compared to Vernors. GO BLUE!
That Goya stuff will light you up if you aren’t ready for it.
Reed’s Strongest is a decent second place.
Wouldn’t know one ginger ale from another.
Been a decade since I’ve had any.
My soda libation of choice is glass bottle cane sugar coke. And that only once every other week.
Tamarind Shrimp is a very good entree I used to get at El Torito Grill in these parts. But most of those restaurants are now gone. I could probably make my own.
If you like ginger then the non-alcoholic ginger beer is best, Crabbies. They make the best alcoholic ginger beer as well.
For gingerale try Bundaberg sold at Cracker Barrel.
