The networks must hate Johnny Miller. Many people do not like the guy. I kind of like Miller. He said some things as a commentator that irritated a lot of players, but he was usually right when he said certain plays were questionable.
That leads us to Xander Schauffele and Ricky Fowler. Everyone is saying that the two golfers finally broke Johnny Miller’s record score of 63 that he shot in the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 1973.
Miller was 8 under par on the par 71 course.
What was Schauffele and Fowler? They were 8 under par, too. They shot 62 at the LA Country Club, which is no Oakmont. (LACC is a nothing course. Huge fairways, short, soft, and cookie-cutter boring.)
Also, Miller shot 8 under on the final day to catch Arnold Palmer and win the open. It’s a disservice to say his record was broken. At best, it was tied.
BUT (lol) Miller’s record for low U.S. Open round was already broken.
Justin Thomas shot a 9 under 63 at Erin Hills in 2017. A Par 72.
As far as I’m concerned, Thomas holds the record for the lowest round in U.S. Open history. Shooting 62 on a par 70 course is not better than a 63 at a par 72 course. Anyone that thinks so is, well, a fucking idiot.
That is like saying a hole-in one is better than a double eagle. It’s not. The double eagle is 3 under par on a par 5. A hole in one is 2 under on a par 3.
Guy #1 has 18 holes-in-one on a par 54 course.
Guy #2 has 18 double eagles on a par 90 course.
Who had the better round?
Guy #1 one shot an 18!!! Wow. That must be the best round EVER! He shot an 18! 36 under par!
Guy #2 two shot a 36. Twice as “bad” as Guy #1.
But hold on. Guy #2 was 54 under par.
Who had the better round?
I rest my case.
Johnny Miller was a decent commentator until he started only talking about Johnny Miller….
Agreed, plus I think all courses should be par 72.
WTF is up with 70 being par?
I’m pulling for Rickie Fowler to win this thing.
He’s a genuine good guy.
I like Xander as well, dude won Olympic Gold and is due for another large victory.
You have identified the reason why I watch golf with the sound off.
Now watch some Cricket.
Personally I believe Al Michaels & an AI version of John Madden should narrate all major sporting events.
I’ve liked the hell out of Rickie Fowler ever since he made up 6 strokes on the last six holes to force a playoff in the Players Championship, and then won it. If he wins I’m fine, but where the hell is Spieth?
joe6, that 17th Island Green performance Rickie put on display that year was unforgettable!
Spieth has tomorrow to dial it in.
^^^^ don’t forget Howard Cosell and Dandy Don…..
No worries Fur….the US Open management will make this course more and more impossible. They ain’t happy with the under par scores….
Loco, yup, birdied it 3 times. It was incredible. Spieth can’t put 4 rounds together. He always has 1 blowout round that kills him.
Jordan Spieth is a head case…..McIlroy or Schafflele will win…
I liked Dandy Don a lot too, Willys.
There were two holes-in-one today as well…
Question: Why the fuck do YOU have to buy the rounds when YOU sink a hole-in-one?
To me, the reward should be the beer cart girl meeting you behind the clubhouse for a freebie…
Sheffler is a head case with his putting.
Rory will NOT win this week.
Loco, Shauffeele as in Zander…ya know, the current co-leader
I know what you wrote Willys, but I feel it’s Sheffler that is a head case with his putting woes.
He dials that shit in, along with Brooks it’s those two motherfuckers swapping wins the rest of the year…
The near non-existent left side of my brain just exploded.
You didn’t even address the real golf-math conundrum:
If Tiger Woods bangs two waitresses in a threesome that are a 6 and an 8, then the next night bangs a 7 and a 9, is the low score the winner?
All I know is I ain’t payin’ no 50 cents for no Coke.
Could you imagine jammin a 350 drive and follow that up with a casual 225 3 iron front fairway bounce run out to the hole pin bank? And do that for 18 holes in a row. Heck, don’t even sink it, just hit the pin on the second shot, lol. I would give my left nut to do that just once. But trees, water and traps always screw that up so my nut is safe.
Par 3 courses are, in comparison, at least a million times more easy.
I’d rather watch paint dry than watch golf.
The technology in the personalized clubs are giving today’s pro golfers a huge advantage over the golfers of 50 yrs ago.
The courses are having to figure out how to put the tee box back even further. There are people who are trying to limit what can be done to the clubs.
The companies that make the clubs show up to tournaments with their trucks and equipment to make adjustments to the players’ clubs for that particular course.
I think that skews the play.
BFH, who holds the record for most home runs in a single season, Maris or Ruth? Not trying to start a fight, just a good barroom discussion
Hard to say which round is better, but I can tell you that an ace on #17 at Pebble Beach is not the same as a hole-in-one on the Windmill Hole at Sir Putts-a-Lot.
If I ever shoot an anything under, anytime, anywhere…
No one is ‘good’ at golf, some are better than others.
Wauco,
Maris had 7 more plate appearances than Ruth.
Ruth had 137 walks.
Maris had 94.
Did they pitch around Ruth more?
Maris put the ball in play more because he struck out less. But Ruth, when he put the ball in play did much more damage. He had 165 RBI and batted .356
Both were better than Maris.
Maris was the guy chasing the record, so he had much more pressure.
Both seasons unreal. But I give the nod to Ruth. Maris’ season was a blip, whereas Ruth did it time and time again. He broke his own record.
“Golf Math is Idiotic”
Tennis math is idiotic when you stop and think about it.
2+2=5 See how simple it is?
maff be hard, yo …….
maff be raycyst, yo ….. goff maff, tennis maff, baseball maff ….
