What Year is This?

Newser-

Unmarried couples in Michigan are a step closer to being able to legally live together as lewdly and lasciviously as they want to. The state Senate voted 29-9 Wednesday to repeal a law that makes it a misdemeanor for an unmarried man to live with an unmarried woman, the Detroit News reports. The bill would strike a provision against “lewdly and lasciviously associating and cohabitating together,” though it would retain a provision banning any individual from “engaging in open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior,” reports WWJ. The law hasn’t been enforced for a long time, but under federal law, a person can’t claim somebody as a dependent on their taxes if their relationship violates state law.

!snip!

What about unmarried men living together? Or 2 women?

So, having a roommate was against the law?

  1. 1960? My parents were married in 1959, ages 19 and 25, never even considered living together before marriage. And they were no puritans.

My fiancé and I lived together for two months begore our wedding in 1996, and my parents gave us the stink-eye for “shacking up”.

  2. In the 50s there was this girl about 10 whose parents were (gasp) divorced and it was a shame to her. She was a beautiful woman last time I saw her in the 70s.

  3. Believe it or not. . .everything, and I mean everything, that is wrong in the world today got legitimized in the late 1950’s – early 1970’s, and living together without the Godly sanction of marriage was one of the larger milestones on this road to perdition. Once that line was crossed the floodgates opened and America has been on a downhill course ever since.

Way too much to say about this subject than space or a reader’s patience would allow. Except I will add this: What does it say about a man and a woman who are content to exploit all the “upside” of living together, but reserve for themselves the right to simply walk away when it no longer suits them?
