Tony Bennett Dead at 96 – IOTW Report

Tony Bennett Dead at 96

VF-

Tony Bennett, the peerless interpreter of the Great American Songbook, and whom Frank Sinatra called “the best in the business,” died Friday in New York City. He was 96.

To quote the title of his career-revitalizing 1986 album, Bennett devoted his nearly 70-year career to The Art of Excellence. One unfortunate album aside (1970’s Tony Bennett Sings the Great Hits of Today), Bennett refused to compromise his music by pandering to trends of the moment to appeal to younger audiences. “Just because disco is popular or rap, I was taught to just be myself and not to imitate what others are doing,” he told me in a 2011 interview to mark his 85th birthday. “Never do an inferior song. I look for definitive versions of songs like [those sung by] Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole. They came from an era of nothing but the best quality and creative musicianship.”

  1. I liked him, he lived a good life, he didn’t have any scandals that I know of like his friends Frank, Dean and Sammy. I think Pat Boone and Frankie Avalon is still living.

  2. RIP Tony. May your fans fill your grave with their flung panties for one final time.

Large though they may now be.

…typical. Heaven gets Tony Bennett, and we’re left with…well, the nearby metropolitan area to me is having Blackfest 23 or something, so *we* are left with Snoop Doggy Dogg, P-Funk connection, and someone called Big Daddy Kane.

    *sigh*.

…I’m not sure how the Lord is going to feel about “The Lady Is A Tramp”, but He gave Tony his gift and I would imagine it will be a wonderful add to those who glorify Him in song. Our loss is Your gain, Lord. I understand You need the best for all eternity.

…Just PLEASE send us something better than Awkwafina as a replacement…

  3. As Laura Ingram said, “Shut up and sing.” We all agree, he was one of the best but when he refused to sing the National Anthem because it was a “war song,” he lost me. He can go F himself.

  4. One of the best musically… politically, well all I can say is that National Anthem “war song” is one of the BIG reasons he was able to live a rich, lavish life style in the richest, most productive and generous nations in Man’s history and it is too bad he couldn’t appreciate that.

  5. Tony was the first Big Name act I saw live. I couldn’t have been more than ten years old when Mom & Dad (Thanks guys) took me to see him on The Steel Pier in Atlantic City. We saw close to the Orchestra Pit right near the drummer… that was the moment I said to myself… “Self, that’s what I ant to do”. Tony was great, but that drummer I can still see in my mind’s eye… dark blue sparkle kit and all. Thanks Tony. you were great RIP Sir

  6. Not much into crooners myself, but there aren’t many (if any) left and he was tops in his art, that says something worth saying. I never knew his politics, which is also a plus for any artist/ entertainer, unlike many (looking at you Sheryl Crow) who’s singing becomes so much screeching ever time they share their political opinions (just don’t, please).

  7. Tony Bennett was a fantastic entertainer who really reflected the great talent of his generation. Sure, Bennett catered to the Hollywierd leftist propaganda, but his God given talent can’t be denied.

    Probably not common knowledge, Bennett was in a campy movie, “The Oscar” 1966. I saw it 20 years ago and loved it. It really is so bad it’s good and had big name stars;

Not bad. He did a great job in that role.

My favorite Tony Bennett song is “The Good Life” very melancholy with beautiful melodies.

Bennett had quite a life. May he rest in peace through God’s mercy and grace.
