  1. @PHenry
It actually was a swamp before being designated the nation’s capital. It used to be called Foggy Bottom, which is still used for the area west of the white house.

  2. @Jethro. I knew that. I went to school at George Washington University and got off Metro at the Foggy Bottom stop.

It was also called Froggy Bottom.

    But I’m sticking with Dildo.

I saw many weird things about that urban campus.
Like when Jimmy Carter hosted the last meeting with the Shah of Iran. There were flatbed trucks rolling down the streets performing mock executions; hangings and beheadings. That was 1978 right before the ayatollah and the hostages. It was chilling stuff. It was easy to figure out what was going to happen.

  4. New York was New Amsterdam – owned by the Dutch.
    Starkville, MS, was Boardtown.
    Pittsburg was Fort Duquesne.
And Detroit was Fort Pontchartrain du détroit, when the Frogs owned it.

I settled all of them, and did the original surveys.

  5. @PHenrey: Froggy Bottom is a popular drinking spot still owned by my friend Hien. It’s been a fixture of GWU evening life for at least 30 years. She moved over to K St., (former Thai Kingdom spot) when the GW commissars ended her lease a few years back.

  6. Lethbridge, Canada was originally called Fort Whoop-up. It’s where liquor traders sold liquor to the local Redskins.

BTW, a group of Redskins want the Washington Commanders to reset the team name to Redskins. At least Redskins is colorful.
