A new court document revealed Special Counsel Jack Smith obtained access to Donald Trump‘s Twitter account – including private messages and draft tweets – after securing a secret search warrant amid his investigations into the former president.
Smith is investigating Trump for alleged crimes to obstruct the 2020 election results and also for his mishandling of classified documents.
The new filing reveals he was able to gain access to Trump’s private direct messages, draft tweets and other information connected to his former account, ‘@RealDonaldTrump’ as Smith continues his investigation.
The special counsel had obtained a secret search warrant in January to scour Trump’s Twitter account to dig for evidence of criminal offenses related to his alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election.
A judge then fined Elon Musk‘s social media giant $350,000 for initially refusing to comply, according to documents released last week. The company, now known as ‘X,’ was also barred from telling Trump about the warrant.
The lesson being reinforced here is that “private” communications transmitted via social media channels is really not private. The rule of thumb is that anything you send through social media channels or via email should be suitable to print on the front page of the New York Times since neither you nor the ultimate recipient of the message have any control on disclosure pursuant to subpoena (or hackers for that matter).
Why is there such a thing as a SECRET search warrant?
If you want evidence of 2020 election obstruction, you need to secure a warrant for all the social media posts that were taken down in collusion with the FBI for “misinformation,” and “Russian disinformation.” While you’re at it, go after selective and bias news reporting in the media as well. Trump pointing out the obstruction is not obstruction.
