Fall Songs – IOTW Report

Fall Songs

Compiled by Woody-

1. “Maggie May” – Rod Stewart

“It’s late September and I really should be back at school”

2. “Boys of Summer” – Don Henley

“Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer’s out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone
I’m driving by your house
Though I know you’re not home”

3. “Try to Remember” – The Brothers Four

“Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember and if you remember
Then follow, follow”

4. “Urge For Going” – Tom Rush

“I awoke today and found the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky, then it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
And all trees are shivering in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go
I get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown”

5. “Back by Fall” – Wendy Waldman

“There’s cryin’ in the city
All the people are sayin’
I heard it on the mountain
Where I was living
No food for the children
Oh, the times are so bad
Whatever happened to giving
Oh mama, mend the hole in my coat
Take my guitar off the wall
I’ve got to go see what I can do
And I hope I’ll be back by fall”

6. “Indian Summer” – Joe Walsh

“I was taken by surprise by the thunder
Sit and stared out at the rain
Taken back, I was younger
In a vacant lot day
And the fall brought an Indian summer
And plenty of places to play”

7. “Ramble On” – Led Zeppelin

“The leaves are falling all around, time I was on my way

Thanks to you, I’m much obliged for such a pleasant stay

But now it’s time for me to go, the autumn moon lights my way.”

8. “Night Moves” – Bob Seger

“When you just don’t seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closin’ in”

9. “Seasons of Wither” – Aerosmith

“Blues hearted lady sleepy was she
Love for the devil brought her to me
Tears of a thousand drawn to her sin
Seasons of wither holdin’ me in”

10. “Leaves That Are Green” – Simon & Garfunkel

“I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
I’m twenty-two now, but I won’t be for long
Time hurries on
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither with the wind
And they crumble in your hand”

11. “Indian Summer” – The Doors

“I love you the best
Better than all the rest

That I meet in the summer
Indian summer”

12. “Autumn Almanac” – the Kinks

“Breeze blows leaves of a musty-coloured yellow
So I sweep them in my sack
Yes, yes, yes, it’s my autumn almanac”

13. “November Rain” – Guns N’ Roses

“‘Cause nothing lasts forever

And we both know hearts can change

And it’s hard to hold a candle

In the cold November rain”

14. “Forever Autumn” – Justin Hayward

“Through autumn’s golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
‘Cause you’re not here”

  1. ‘See You In September’ ~ The Happenings

“Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love”

  2. Daughtry – September

    How the time passed away
All the trouble that we gave
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste?
    All the promises we made
One by one, they vanish just the same
Of all the things I still remember
    Summer’s never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
    But the memories remain
    In the middle of September
We’d still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose, but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could’ve been
It was worth it in the end

  3. ‘September’ ~ Earth, Wind & Fire

“Now, December found the love we shared in September
Only blue talk and love, remember true love we share today
Hey, hey, hey, ba-de-ya, say do you remember?
    Ba-de-ya, dancing in September
Ba-de-ya, never was a cloudy day, yow”

  4. ‘September Song’ ~ Frank Sinatra

“Oh, it’s a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn’t got time for the waiting game.
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
    September, November
And these few precious days I’ll spend with you
These precious days I’ll spend with you”

(beautifully sung by Old Blue Eyes)

  5. dunno why I had this brain fart while thinking of fall songs … but I’ll lay this in your laps … a poem I remembered from a Lit Class that I wrapped my head around & never quite forgot … hope you enjoy it

‘My November Guest’ ~ Robert Frost

My sorrow, when she’s here with me,
Thinks these dark days of autumn rain
    Are beautiful as days can be;
    She loves the bare, the withered tree;
She walks the sodden pasture lane.

Her pleasure will not let me stay.
She talks and I am fain to list:
She’s glad the birds are gone away,
She’s glad her simple worsted grey
Is silver now with clinging mist.

    The desolate, deserted trees,
The faded earth, the heavy sky,
The beauties she so truly sees,
She thinks I have no eye for these,
And vexes me for reason why.

Not yesterday I learned to know
The love of bare November days
Before the coming of the snow,
But it were vain to tell her so,
And they are better for her praise.

  6. Dan Fogelberg – Old Tennessee

    End of October
The sleepy brown woods seem to
Nod down their heads to the Winter.
    Yellows and grays
    Paint the sad skies today
    And I wonder when
    You’re coming home.
    Woke up one morning
    The wind through the window
    Reminded me Winter
    Was just ’round the bend.
    Somehow I just didn’t
    See it was coming

  7. During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.

The Fall of the House of Usher
    – Edgar Allen Poe

“But Loco, tis not a song!”
Ah but it is an instrumental on ‘Tales of Mystery & Imagination’ by the Alan Parson’s Project

Best album for your turn-table IMHO…
