New Beatles Song to Be Released Nov 2

The song will be a cleaned up collaboration of a demo Lennon made in 1978 called Now and Then.

There is something about Lennon’s voice in his demos that sound irritating to me. He sounds strained and tinny and uncommitted.

I hope they go big and not try to “retain the essence” of the demo. The essence here is not great. If Lennon was relegated to the back-up singing, where the key was changed so what we have in the demo becomes the harmony, that would be fine. Reports say McCartney used AI to “clean up” Lennon’s voice, so I doubt they will go the “harmony” route.

Free as a Bird was a Lennon demo that the surviving Beatles collaborated on.

They didn’t consult me, lol, but I was horrified by the tinny use of Lennon’s demo voice, buried in the mix, and then along comes McCartney in the middle 8 (which he wrote and added) with a voice clear as a bell. Why couldn’t he emulate the same vocal treatment and bury himself in the mix? It was off-putting how front and center he made himself. And then George does the same.

It sounds like Lennon is singing from the grave, with the mic under the soil. But that’s just my stupid take.

Real Love was a more cohesive production-

  1. Im no longer seven years old like the day my oldest brother brought home the first Beatle album to be sold in America and I heard “I Saw Her Standing There” for the first time. THAT had an impact

But now that I’ve received my first Social Security check, Im just not as enthralled to hear a new Beatle tune, especially by John Lennon in his full hippie asshole phase

Now that Im old enough to be the father of my 1960’s father, I’m no longer yanking my pud about the fact that Lennon was always pissing him off.

  2. And dont get me started on the Stones. But since you did, let me start by saying I was mesmerized like most of you when I heard “Gimme Shelter” at age 12

But after seeing them phone it in for the past forty years, I cant get it up for the Stones, either

  3. When Joe DiMaggio retired, somebody asked him why he did. The person told Joe that he was still a good player. DiMaggio replied, “But I don’t play like Joe DiMaggio.”

I wish the Beatles would do that. That being said, Ringo surrounds himself with top musicians and tours with them. I’m sure that would be a great show. However, I wish McCartney would just go away. That song he did at the London Olympics was horrid and anyone else would have been runout of town for doing it.

While I think Lennon’s death was tragic, I also think he was over the hill by that time. For them to dig out some old crap that even he rejected is ludicrous.

As for some trivia, I think I might have mentioned this before, but the radio station I worked for in 1980 carried American Top 40. The shows were dated to be released on Saturdays. They were recorded nine days earlier on Thursday. That mean that the show was already completed when Lennon was killed. They sent a replacement record out. (The show was sent on four 12 inch records.) Watching The Wheels was on the chart at that time. On the original record, Casey Kasem did the normal “Here’s the latest record from John Lennon.” In the replacement, he did a memorial with a message to Shaun.

That wasn’t the only thing that was changed. On the other side of that particular record, CK read a letter to Casey: had anyone ever had a posthumous number one record. Of course, they took that out.

  4. I recall back in 1964 Ed Sullivan and how their popularity EXploded, hairstyles and all but now ho hum
At least they appeared to be gentleman and bowed and all
unlike many entertainers today with crappy dress and lyrics

  5. Aw hell, let ‘em screw around with whatever is left in their quiver. They’re 81 fucking years old.
And they don’t need dollars, so forget that.
They were the biggest phenomenon in the history of music and if you’re old enough, you know how visceral it was. Absolute joy and adventure. Transformed lives and styles.
And two of them are dead now.
Let em search for glints of glee they may have left.
    Who’s it gonna hurt?

  6. All I remember about the Beetles is that, unlike other rock-n-roll bands, they occasionally used more than three chords. Oh, and all the screaming, wet-crotch girls on the Ed Sullivan TV show.

But really, I was into the “B’s” back then!

    Bach, Beethoven and Brahms
