Americans who plan to serve their family and friends a traditional Thanksgiving feast on Thursday will once again need to dig deep into their hurting pocketbooks to pay for it, new data from the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) suggests.
To feed a family of 10 a Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, buttered rolls, cranberries, veggies, and pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream, this year, the average American will shell out $61.17. More
Who are these guys kidding. Granted, I live California, but I paid $67.00 for a 19 pound Turkey. That’s just the Turkey.
What’s the going rate for 20 pounds of Naked Clams?
We used to have big Thanksgiving doo’s at the cottage about 5 different families from around the lake would show up,each year a different family would host.
Was always a great time and you could pull it off with minimal damage to the wallet.
We stopped that, not only because we were getting old an crankey but because costs went through the roof.
@Brad
Did it come with the gibblets?
Gotta cook them in the broth and use it to make the gravy.
I’ll have a cigar with Dad for Thanksgiving.
I went with a Heritage Turkey for the first time. Free range, no growth hormones, healthy lifestyle, right to the end of course. Currently in brine, 23 pounds, $110.00. Side dishes, wine, couple days of labor, $61.17? Just part of the deep state/media propaganda.
I have 24 people coming over, I couldn’t serve bologna sandwiches and sodas for $61.17! I’ve had it with the bullshit our government and media are feeding us!

As you know I’m not a big fan of previously frozen meet. So the Turkey I purchased, referenced above is a a fresh turkey.
Wifey just got home with the rest of the meal. She spent $175.00 almost to the penny. What’s on the menu? Candied Yams, Deviled Eggs, smashed potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberries, rolls, stuffing, home baked apple and pumpkin pies. I don’t think that’s out of line with what most people serve.
I told her the projected cost in the article and her reply was, you couldn’t serve hot dogs for ten people for $60.00. Even if they were turkey dogs.
Just tell the decrepit, decerebrate pResident to keep cranking the money presses and sending the pieces of paper to China and the Ukraine
By next year Thanksgiving dinner will cost only $1675.00.
Brad, I have to tease you a bit.
19 lb Turkey?
Are you on a Diet or something?
I have a 26 lb’er and & that’s just to celebrate the “M’erican” holiday after already doing the Canuckistan one Last Month.
Cheers! (sometimes I gotta take a shot just to see how you react)
Brad, did you know that anything frozen at 0 degrees F or higher is considered fresh? -10 below and it’s frozen. My Turkey was slaughtered on Saturday morning, the damn thing is still gobbling.

Actually I did know that. For the last couple years I’ve been buying them at a little Boutique grocery store that brings them in daily. That said, Turkey is NOT my favorite meal. But I do believe there’s a significant taste difference between frozen and not frozen.
Saw a 38 lb fresh turkey at the market today. For a second I thought someones kid had crawled into the meat case.

Well now you’ve hurt my feelings.
Just kidding, I don’t have any. There was a day my friend I could have consumed a good chunk of it. Recent events have curbed my appetite.
Brad, I guess I knew that you would have known that. I mostly said that so others would also know. Turkey is not my first choice either. I’ve been trying to talk my wife into a Northwest Thanksgiving dinner but she’s a bit of a traditionalist so I’m getting nowhere with that. I can picture salmon, crab, shrimp, red wine, etc. Still, no matter what, Thanksgiving is a favorite of mine!

Back a couple years when I was hunting a lot we did Duck Breasts, a Pheasant and a small turkey. There was left over Turkey. Everything else went. However next year everyone wanted the traditional turkey dinner. Oh well.
Once some people identify Turkey with Thanksgiving there is no going back. However, one Thanksgiving my wife and two boys went to Hawaii for Thanksgiving. This was at least 30 years ago. We spent he day at the beach, came back to the condo and made grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. Definitely in my top 3 of Thanksgivings!
I’ll have to be the curmudgeon and state that I’m glad I left most of the extended family behind in MD. I no longer have to see meth heads itch and gyrate about the room… I no longer have to hear about 700hp trucks, and other dubious automotive bullshit… I no longer have to see my MIL’s eyes narrowed with spite and overflowing passive aggressive frothing…
No more will I have to hear how my SIL is going to claw out my niece’s eyes for, “Being a little bitch”.
Ahhhhh….
Congratulations, Erik! Leaving that shit behind is good for the soul. Have a Great Thanksgiving!
Have a Great Thanksgiving, too, joe6pak! And everyone here at IOTW!
Even Aldi prices have gone way up. We usually get a turkey breast instead of the whole bird. The prices have doubled. The neighbors who raised excellent turkeys divorced and sold their farm. We haven’t looked for another fresh source. $61 is BS even for a a very small number of people. Heck even ‘u pick’ orchard prices have gone up. I was given a bargain 1/2 price on Nova Spy apples because 2 had small bruises. I couldn’t believe the original price the orchard owner quoted. Sadly our last MacIntosh tree was struck by lightning.
Have a Good Holiday EVERYONE!
$61.17… per person! 🤣
^^^^^ was thinking the same!
Most people have seen what grocery prices have risen to over the past three years thanks to Jackass Joe and it’s been to the tune of 2 to 3 times higher for many items. Forget the monthly inflation rate. The real inflation between 200 and 300% since Joseph Stolen assumed office! THAT’S what needs to be looked at. The monthly rate just softens the blow… and God knows it blows!!

just a little dry…but it’s fine. Just like Joe Stolen.
I just spent under $60 for Thanksgiving dinner this morning for my daughter, my son and my 3 grandkids and his girlfriend and her daughter. I’m going to spatchcock a 12 # turkey this year and see how that goes.
This is a joke. About the only time I buy much food from grocery stores anymore is Thanksgiving and Christmas.
That $61 doesn’t even come close to what my turkey and ham cost. My turkey alone was almost $50.
Granted I cheat at Thanksgiving and Christmas because I have so much to make, so I don’t make my pie crusts or rolls from scratch like I do the rest of the year, so that’s an added cost. For food and drinks it cost me over $400 this year. Which I always fill an ice chest with soda, bottled tea and bottled water, I also cheat and buy paper plates and plastic silverware. I spend three days cooking and washing dishes, I don’t want to wash dishes or glasses after everyone.
geoff – I have to admit I never heard the term “spatchcock” before.
I thought you were going to do something kinky to the turkey!
I have since looked it up. I have never seen anyone do that before either, but I can see where the bird cooks more evenly.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I’ve spatchcocked small Cornish game hens before and they’ve all turned out very well before. My dad was the one who taught me about spatchcocking a few years ago with game hens. It also works well with whole chickens. Happy Thanksgiving and I’m making challah again this year and this time with fresh yeast and our KitchenAid machine with its dough hook to knead the bread. Last years, challah turned out awful like a hockey puck and we ended up throwing it out.
I’ve seen my cousin do that to a chicken when he cooked it on the grill, never heard it called spatchcock before. I learned a new word today.
I’ll be having a 16 oz Rib eye on the grill and some wonderful scotch…. Comes in at about $200….
FJB
Local butcher selling 2″ thick Rib Eyes for $12-15 apiece.
A couple of those on the grill with some candied yams, squash & mushrooms, & baked red potatoes with sour cream & chives, & biscuits.
Who says you have to have fowl?
