Oregon Tries Denying Re-election to State Senators Who Flee a Quorum

Semantics were the focus of oral arguments before the Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday as a lawyer for five Republican state senators who walked out of this year’s legislative session sought to convince the judges that the plain language of Measure 113 should allow the senators to seek reelection next year.

Drafters of Measure 113 intended for it to bar lawmakers who accrue 10 or more unexcused absences from running for reelection, an attempt to stop walkouts that Republicans have increasingly used as a tactic to stall bills pushed by the Democratic majority in the Legislature. More

  1. Don’t we complain about the Texas (and other states) Dems who do the same, when they are in the minority? Running away seems like a poor option – just makes you look useless. Regardless, let’s not be hypocrites about it.

  2. It appears that preventing a quorum is a valid strategy for the minority party. Just like the filibuster. If their constituents support them, then it seems undemocratic to bar them from reelection.

    Yeah, I thought it sucked when demo reps did it, even to the point of hiding out in another state.

    It still sucks when repubs do it. Instead of running away, stand up and be counted.
