San Francisco school board approves big raises; then projects $610 million deficits

(The Center Square) – The San Francisco Unified School District is projecting a combined spending deficit of almost $611 million in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years after giving out what it called “historic” pay increases to staff.

The district estimates it will rack up a $194.4 million deficit in 2024-25 and a $420.5 million deficit in 2025-26, according to reports provided by the district at the Dec. 12 Board of Education meeting.

A week earlier, the district announced it was giving out “historic raises for educators.”

The raises included a $9,000 salary increase for teachers in 2023-24. Teachers will get another 5% raise in 2024-25. The district had 3,550 teachers in 2022-23. The school board also approved a 6% salary increase in 22-23 and a 10% salary increase in 2023-24 for members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021. MORE

  1. Grumble, grumble.

The JTN article is one more in a seemingly infinite body of reporting that is full of numbers but missing a few that make understanding the subject impossible.

What are the starting, mean, median, and max SF teacher salaries?
What are the starting, mean, median, and max teacher salaries in equivalent cost-of-living areas nation-wide?

Wouldn’t those numbers help understand just how larcenous and abusive the SF teachers union is?

  2. Why is ANY PARENT willingly handing their children over to the government monopoly day prison system every morning? Seriously. If you think that YOIR child’s school, teacher, etc is OK, while all the problems are limited to everyone else’s schools, teachers, etc the YOU are part of the problem and completely delusional.
