Release the Beast – Ford F-250

WSJ

BEHOLD, the king of the Monsters. Our guest this week is a 2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty 4ร—4 Crew Cab, a high-capacity version of Americaโ€™s favorite pickup, powered by the latest and last of Fordโ€™s old-school V8sโ€”a naturally aspirated, pushrod-actuated relic nicknamed Godzilla.

I realize that to Millennials those words may appear as a series of 1s and 0s. What the hell is a pushrod? Naturally aspirated? So it wants to be a forest ranger? More

Disclosure: I learned to drive stick on an F-250. That truck feared nothing. – Dr. Tar

  1. I’d prefer an old school with a 300 straight six. Won’t win a drag race but lots of torque and reliability.
And carburated instead of FI. And a two door regular cab 8 foot bed. I’m single.

  2. I love my Jeep Gladiator (waiting for the laughs…) But, I only do occasional hauling and towing, love the looks (yep – I really do), it’s a stick and I can make it topless.

V6 ~280 HP and torq. Manual 4×4 – no computer control.

  3. buried a 94 F250 with the big V8 gas motor 2 years ago. it had 304,000 miles on it. all I ever did to it was tune-up and oil changes. The body finally rusted away.

  4. “The tech I found indispensable was the automated steering assistance that was built into the lane-keeping/centering system.”

If staying between the lines without assistance is a problem for you, you shouldn’t be driving a pickup. Millions of actual truck drivers, pulling 53′ trailers have no problem doing it all day every day.

Stick with you ’94 Ranger if you want a box on the back.

I drove a new Suburban with that crap on it for about 400 miles. What a pain in the ass. If you change lanes and don’t use your signal you’ve got the damn thing beeping at you and the wheel resists turning. No thanks.

  6. ” Millions of actual truck drivers, pulling 53โ€ฒ trailers have no problem doing it all day every day.”… Ahem, according to my truck driver BIL, The later model tractors of which you speak have the “lane-keeping/centering system.” Just saying. I have been driving for 50 years and have never required “lane-keeping/centering system.”

You’re right! The 300 six cylinder was the bomb. Extremely reliable and easy to work on by anybody, not that it needed it. The 302 V8 was another great one.

  8. Price, as tested: $78,610

Or. You could be a complete goof and stroll onto the Ford lot all decked out in your gay as fuck Harley Davidson tee-shirt, leather jacket, with a chain rope around your waist holding on to a Harley wallet in your back pocket, throw down $126,000 and drive off in a Harley Davidson trimmed F-150.

  9. I was interested in an E-350 with a Heavy Duty Knapheide Commercial Body on it for my last & Final commercial service vehicle about 10 months ago. $78,000 brand new canuckistan dollars.

A full size Mid-height Ford Transit was backordered for 2 years with an extra $8,000 Market adjustment FEE.

I declined after doing some research on the Godzilla Motor and its issues/ fuel consuption. That exact same truck is still sitting on the lot unmoved.

The Transit Mid roof 1-ton is now back down to $64,000 with no extra fees & Much less fuel costs. (looks like a FAG TRUCK THOUGH)

With the way Ford, Chev, Ram build SHITE these days, I will just go with the cheaper at the last minute since there are no real mechanics left in Toronto anymore.

My 2014 E-250 is still running ok & has about 2 years left in her.

  10. I wouldn’t buy anything much newer than 20 years old. I can do anything (but rebuild a tranny) from carburettors to OBDII, but these newer vehicles have all sorts of retard shit on them, and CAN bus nightmare crap. The diesels are DEF, and the petrol engines run all sorts of variable valve timing, and other shit systems that are weak and needy.

Are you effn kidding me? I haven’t driven in years, but still have my CDL.

Maybe they are adding the lane change restrictions to the newer models because of all the foreigners driving. Or maybe it is for all the drivers texting while driving and moving into my lane that I have been encountering, just recently, in my travels.

Either way, if you can’t keep a pickup between the lanes without help, you shouldn’t be driving one.

Also, 50 years? You have to be a million miler, impressive if so.

  12. GAWD!
All that pretty plastic grille is begging to get busted. And the bumper doesn’t protrude out far enough in front of it. If you bump something and compress the bumper cushions the entire grille and hood are instantly damaged.
    No thanks…

  13. I have a 6.7l diesel F-250 4×4 CC… Bought it used, all of two years old at the time, and that rubbed half the price off it. Previous owner did a leveling kit, and a nice plate bumper & bull guard. Apparently he had two kids, and he and his wife went for #3… And he had to trade it in on a minivan so #4 would have a place to sit. I sorta felt bad as I got my checkbook out… ๐Ÿ˜€

  14. 78k without a diesel? What are you paying for? Where is the money going? I see a burgeoning business renovating pre-2007 diesel and non-diesel pickups . And that article read like a Ford press release.

  15. 2000 Toyota 4Runner (Gen 3), over 250K miles.
No pick-em-up, but it’s done its fair share of hauling.

  16. I just sold a 1997 4×4 extended cab Dodge 1500 with less the 67K miles for $8500…..nice truck….

I’ve got a 1995 Ford 7.3 diesel extended cab 250 4×4 with 260Kmiles that needs batteries and turbo and tires….It doesn’t burn oil with 20/50 oil and a maximum dose of Lucas oil treatment, but could stand a rebuild….Throw 10 grand at this truck and you’ve got a 300K mile truck..Body is OK, not much rust, dent on drivers side bed and rocker….2 K and it could be yours….The core charge for a 7.3 was 6 K the last time I looked…..It was a BEAST in it’s day….ask Fur for my e-mail if interested….It’s in north central Kansas….

  17. @Willysgoatgruff

Rebuild a 7.3l at 260k? Heresy… Probably just needs a turbo & injectors/cups. Does it have the newer high pressure injector lines?

    I have a 23 year old 7.3l Excursion 4×4 that just got it’s first HPOP @210k mi. The 7.3l is a legend.

  18. The OM617 is also a legend. The car will fall to crap before the engine.

They can have significant gudgeon knock at 200,000 miles and still go 300,000 more miles.

  19. @Kali Refugee in Texas….Come and get it…..It can be yours for mere 2K!….It ran when I got here 9 years ago….come look at it!….I have my memories of bird hunting with my GSP and much more…..I LOVE that truck, but need to hit the Lotto to rebuild it…..

  20. The Godzilla engine gets 13-15 mpg unloaded? My ’16 F350 4×4 6.7L Diesel gets 20 mpg unloaded. Fuel my be a dollar a gallon more than gas but 5 mpg more and I can max out to the 26,000 pounds total weight to go up and down mountains without any struggle.

  21. Erik

06 LBZ Duramax are going 500K plus. Then kids are buying, throwing a tuner on them which render 1,000 hp and driving them another 100K until the crack a piston. GM screwed up on that motor. It’s damn near bullet proof.
