  2. Great news if they approach the Lord with repentance and contrition in their hearts and a sincere desire to follow the Lord instead of the world (“Go thou forth and sin no more”), but baptism is a symbol and not a healing in and of itself.

    If they approach the waters to virtue signal, make a spouse happy, because their friends are doing it, or even because they think it will make a parent mad, there’s nothing a dip in the water will do. If you go in an unrepentant sinner, you come out a wet unrepentant sinner.

    Baptism is an outward sign of an inward faith.

    If it’s approached for any other purpose, it’s just a mockery of faith.

    And you know how God feels about being mocked…

  4. I think a lot more than 2,000. Churches are booming – well certain ones anyway, the ones that look to the Bible. I know my church has lots of baptisms – and of people who truly desire them.
    I know the data is out there but sometimes hard to find, I was trying to find trends. This data shows that ‘mainstream protestant’ is a much smaller population than ‘evangelical and conservative protestant’. I don’t know whether Catholicism is growing or dwindling but it is still large.

  5. SNS, God begs to differ. “No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.” The Second Person of the Trinity, John 3:5.

    It is NOT symbolic, but actually remits sin.

    …I’m not saying water baptism isn’t required, of course it is.

    I AM saying it’s meaningless if you’re just doing it for show.

    God knows your heart and no water can wash away sins you don’t repent of and may still glory in.

    But the repentance HAS to come first.

    …I’ve made no secret that I left the Catholic Church some time ago, so you may well consider me to be hellbound. But I was washed in baptismal water as an innocent, unknowing baby by the priest of my Catholic parents’ parish, then did evil in the sight of the Lord as a young adult. Tell me then, had I remained in the Church, would that water have been sufficient in the face of my insults to the Lord many years later?

    I’m not trying to be smart, I’m genuinely curious. I found I was quite out of step with modern Catholic teachings when mother passed, so I am interested in what the Church teaches now on this subject, if you’re willing…

  7. Baptism is an indelible mark. Having said that, I agree with you that the person being baptised must turn from sin and have a firm purpose of amendment. Otherwise it is just getting wet in public. And for the sincere, it remits original sin in all, and actual sin in those over the age of reason. I highly recommend the Baltimore Catechism #2 for an excellent Cliff Notes explanation of the Catholic Faith.
