For Sale: 1976 Ford Escort – 44,5K Miles Only One Owner, $64,000 Minium

DMUK

Heading to the auction block next month, registration ‘NUF 6I7P’ is a 1976 Escort MkII RS2000 finished in a unique bronze paint with white and gold pinstripes and the only version ever produced in right hand drive with an automatic gearbox. But that’s not what makes it special…

It stands alone from any other Escort produce because it was bespoke built for – and first registered to – Henry Ford II so that the car company boss could tour Europe and the UK in the seventies. More

  1. Hey – I had a 88 Escort that reached 242k miles with only a tie rod wear out and two fuel pumps failing. I think I had to clean the MAF sensor twice. Other than maintenance items that was all I did. Someone ran me off the highway and I totaled it when hitting the jersey wall. No injuries. The body got twisted but I was still able to drive it home, crab crawling the entire way.
I think it was the only Escort ever built 100% correctly.

  2. It’s an RS2000; not your run-of-mill Escort. It’s a very high performance European rally car. Probably worth the price since they are very rare. But still a ford, unfortunately.

  3. Never had a Ford go over 50K without needing multiple visits for warranty work or just outright failing to point where it was just time to move it down the road. That includes two personal vehicles, neither of which survived more than 55Kmi – the last one was leaking brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, trans oil to the point where it looked like tha Exon Valdiz had been parked in my garage… and geezuss was I glad to get rid of that leper! Many of the company Fords were complete FAILS and quite a few of the rentals left me stranded or something didn’t work right to the point where I finally had to specify: NO FORDs when scheduling a rental. The company finally stopped buying fleet Fords and went to Chevy’s and Jeeps instead of dropping hundreds of thousands on repairs! The Company Ford vans were better than their sedans, but on the whole the Chevy Vans were better.

  4. Chevy- up ’til the early ’70s:
    Small block/Q jet/early HEI/TH400 = winning combo.
    Even better- ZZ4 crate motor/TPI.

LS conversions all the rage now but look like a PITA.
Not a fan of big blocks, turbos or diesels.
    Little experience w/ Fords.

  5. I retract my above comment after actually reading the article with the accompanying photo. It’s not the car I was thinking of; it’s just a POS English Ford Escort. I made the mistake 30 years ago of buying one of my daughters a used American Ford Escort. Big mistake, waste of money, and as a bonus…I got to be the chief mechanic. Geeze, I hated that car. Next time I’ll tell about the ‘74 Comet I had the misfortune of owning.

  6. You can likely repair that car and do maintenance with simple tools for the most part and no need to hookup a computer to see which sensor, circuit board or computerized device might be giving you a problem.
I still have my old timing light and dwell meter just in case I come across an vehicle. Hell, I miss those days.

  7. Different Tim – I still have nice old 4 cylinder Onan generator you can work on – not that it needs it tho – That thing is solid as Sears (as they used to say) and works perfectly for being a half century old! Tested every month or so.
