The price of a Thanksgiving turkey is certainly not what it used to be.
According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of what the government calls “other uncooked poultry including turkey” in the United States has gone up 23 percent from October 2020 — the last Thanksgiving season of President-elect Donald Trump’s first term — to October 2024, about four years into the Biden-Harris administration.
This coincides with the reality that most Americans, 67 percent, expect a turkey to be at their Thanksgiving table.
Americans may feel slightly less sticker shock when they buy ham, which has risen 18 percent since October 2020, per Consumer Price Index (CPI) data.
“67 percent”
I’m surprised it is not higher. We have always had turkey for Thanksgiving and prime rib for Christmas. I can see cutting back on that extra pie, one less jello salad, or even getting a smaller bird, but you gotta have turkey.
Related, I might have shared this before but I highly recommend spatchcocking that sucker, you will NEVER cook turkey a different way ever again.
This is how I’ve done it the last few years;

I’m thankful that my sister’s employer gives her a free turkey every Thanksgiving. It’s from the family turkey farm down the street in the little town she works in. They don’t feed them any toxic crap, which is nice!
Rich Taylor – Have done it that way without garlic . Am so happy that IOTW doesn’t have smell – o – vision ’cause your video made me hungry!!
Technically, a pan full of turkey necks and feet are still turkey. Enjoy.
Don’t fergit the lips…
The ones that fall from the helicopter are much more tender.
“Am so happy that IOTW doesn’t have smell – o – vision…”
Me too because every time the iOTW staff posts about democrats, it would smell like ass, B.O., and crotch!
We try and buy fresh birds, never frozen. A 19.09 lb Turkey cost me $82.00. this year. I seem to notice any thing from a pig really expensive. Although not at the rate red meat has gone up.
Rich, wear do you cook the dressing? I bought a spare bird one year for the sole purpose of boiling that sucker in peanut oil. It was a 12 pound bird. It came out looking like a Cornish Game hen. Every time my wife brings it up she laughs so hard she has tears running down her cheeks.
We do Prime Rib at Christmas too. I think I have the boss talked into letting me put it on the smoker this year.
^^^ If you must have stuffing, you could cook it separately, but we have forgone it for the last few years. The wife makes a killer potato dish with sour cream and cheddar cheese and with all the other accouterments, we don’t miss it.
I’ve never smoked a prime rib, you must let us know how it turns out.
You will NOT be disappointed with a smoked Prime Rib! I’ve done several and they are really good! I like to sauté a bunch of garlic and onions and stuff them into slits cut into the meat. Everyone has their favorite and they are probably all good.
If you are going to sauté the garlic and onions be sure to keep some firmness in them, otherwise it’s tough to push them into the meat. I’ve learned the hard way.
The wife does a stuffing with thin sliced apples and dried cranberries mixed in that I could make a meal on. Candied Yams, my moms recipe. Now I’m getting hungry. But that potato dish sounds interesting. Not a big fan of mashed russets.
I like food/recipe discussions. This is the first year in about 30 that we don’t have 20 plus people over. Just 4 of us, so I’m smoking Turkey thighs, and wild rice dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, oh, and Pecan Pie for desert. It will be a good day!
I was shopping yesterday and saw a 35lb fresh turkey at the store, at first I thought a small child had crawled into the refrigeration case. I’m not a big turkey fan, but I like all the fixings. I’ve got a nice NY strip in the fridge for tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at IOTW.
