  1. Every statue of an ancient Roman man, at least prior to AD 1, showed them to be ultra serious gents, with visages as spare as the trim Latin Language. No funny stuff, no embellishment, no smiling. Not much fun in those days, if you weren’t upper class. if you weren’t upper class you would have liked Gladiatorial Combat or the merciless killing of animals in the Coliseum, or the chariot races.

OTOH, Romans liked plays, some of them funny.

  2. The beginning of the end for Romans (and the end took centuries) IMO was the walloping they suffered 9 AD in a forest in Northern Germany. The German warriors destroyed 3 entire legions and the Roman General fell on his sword, i.e., committed suicide.

Archeologists have found the site and have excavated bones, equipment, coins, weapons. It’s in the Teutoburg Forest.

    Sum lumen projectum nauta.
    Vescar spinacco,
    Ad finem pugnabo
Sum lumen projectum nauta! Toot toot!
