Isolated Antarctic Research Station in Real Trouble

BBC

A group of scientists due to work together for months at a remote Antarctic research station has been rocked after a member of the team was accused of physical assault.

A team of nine researchers were due to spend the Antarctic winter at the South African-run base, which sits about 170km (about 105 miles) from the edge of the ice shelf and is difficult to reach.

But a spokesperson for the South African government told the BBC “there was an assault” at the station, following earlier allegations of inappropriate behaviour from inside the camp. More

  1. South Africa? This wouldn’t by chance be a, ahem, diverse group trying to get along while trapped by weather and living crammed in and on top of one another, would it?

  2. Glaringly scant on specifics, what type of assault and what inappropriate behavior, this tells me nothing.

How much trouble can a bunch of pocket protector-wearing nerdy scientists get into anyway?

And what dumbass thought it was a good idea to put women in an isolated remote station for months at a time?

  3. Seems to me I’ve read about this before. About 5 years ago. I’m thinking if you lock up a couple women in an enclosure with a bunch of men, sooner or later one of those men is going to want to see if the interlocking parts fit. Maybe even a couple of the women are curios.

  4. 13 months in isolation, what could go wrong, until you finish that first month.

These team should be told they’ll be on their own for 14 months and use that first month as a trial period to weed out those who aren’t going to be able to get along and pull that person out before they start the long haul.

  5. They better get back to the South Africa and scrap that pointless mission before the place becomes an Antarctic version of “Clue”. The mad scientist did it.
