This article reminded me of a co-worker I had back in the day.
I walked over to grab some items and there was a lady from Jordan (mostly raised here, spoke English well) and another woman talking about first cousin marriage. Jordanian said that her husband is her first cousin, dad’s side. She was going on for a good 30 seconds about how her kids are normal, good grades, no defects, etc. She’s not muslim. She doesn’t regret her husband. BUT. They would not make her kids do the same. They have to find their own spouses (spice?) on their own terms.
She was then asked if she was living in the US, would she follow her parents’ (muslim) demands that she marry a cousin. I didn’t hear the answer because I had heard enough. lol
I would think that if a girl were given a chance, she would say NO to marrying anyone from her own village, much less her cousin n nem.

Back in the 90s, some guy in CA told me that rednecks in the mountains were cousin marriers. I said, don’t you think that all the kids from the baby mamas around here (ie: 5 kids from 5 different men) won’t run into their full or half brother or sister one day? Inbreeding enhances both superior qualities as well as defects.
It doesn’t cause them.
The defective recessive genes have to be there in the first place.
Historically, populations of people have not always been that diverse. Far fewer people to choose from.
I suspect that there are biological reasons that women (way more picky) are attracted to some men and not others, and that in addition to certain populations already carrying defective genes, these defectively inbred populations also have customs that have prohibited women from making free choices.
