US President Donald Trump is seeking about $230 million in compensation from the Justice Department for federal investigations into him, according to people familiar with the matter quoted by The New York Times.
The claims, submitted through an administrative process that can precede a lawsuit, relate to two major inquiries: the FBI and special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and the 2022 search of Trump’s Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, over classified documents.
The move is unprecedented in US history as a sitting president is pursuing financial compensation from the same government he leads. Legal experts say it poses significant ethical questions, given that any decision on a settlement could be made by senior Justice Department officials who previously served as Trump’s lawyers or represented his associates. This is another reason why prosecutions are so important. For every person involved in these treasonous crimes against him, Trump should be able to sue for possession of their real property and other assets, leaving them essentially busted.
As well he should. In a just world it would ultimately be recovered from the pensions of the Cheney and their ilk.
