    Current thingism.

My buddy’s band was very popular in Tacoma/Seattle scene back in the early 1980’s, they used to break into this as soon as their leader showed up on the scene.

They seek him here, they seek him there
His clothes are loud, but never square
It will make or break him, so he’s got to buy the best
‘Cause he’s a dedicated follower of fashion
And when he does his little rounds
‘Round the boutiques of London town
Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends
‘Cause he’s a dedicated follower of fashion
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
He thinks he is a flower to be looked at
And when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight
He feels a dedicated follower of fashion
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
There’s one thing that he loves and that is flattery
One week he’s in polka-dots, the next week he’s in stripes
‘Cause he’s a dedicated follower of fashion
They seek him here, they seek him there
In Regent Street and Leicester Square
Everywhere the Carnabetian army marches on
Each one a dedicated follower of fashion
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
His world is built ’round discotheques and parties
This pleasure-seeking individual always looks his best
‘Cause he’s a dedicated follower of fashion
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
Oh yes, he is (oh yes, he is)
He flits from shop to shop just like a butterfly
In matters of the cloth, he is as fickle as can be
‘Cause he’s a dedicated follower of fashion
He’s a dedicated follower of fashion
He’s a dedicated follower of fashion

  2. Years ago while on vacation, our family went into a Neiman Marcus just for laughs (mostly at the prices on the goods). One of my favorite items was a silvery, sparkly pair of women’s sandals that didn’t look substantial enough to make it through even one summer season. Price? $750–ON SALE. HAHAHAHA!

  3. I bought a pair of Marc Fisher shoes on sale for my sister’s wedding back in the tens. Normally $160, got them for around $42, if I remember right. Leather with gold “glitter” sling backs. Super cute.

Now, that said, they were worth it. Not a scratch, crease, never stretched out weird, didn’t discolor, nothing broke off, etc.

A lucky purchase. But would I have paid the original price of $160 for them? Not a chance. lol

  4. I used to pay about $200 for Bally shoes at their local outlet (now closed). In the store they were around $850. Those shoes were outstanding and lasted forever. Occasionally the higher priced brands are justified in charging more.

  5. Remember when you used to by Wingtips and they were so well made you would wear out the soles and pay to re-sole them because they were still in such good shape? Now, those were the days of fine, American-made leather shoes! (I’m trying to figure out what decade that was! I remember they were about $20.)

  7. chuckie, I think that’s about how much I paid for my hiking boots, mid 70s. Backpacked part of the Appalachian trail (KY and TN) for a week. They served me many times on hikes and other backpacking trips.

My favorite hike was up Mt. Rainer from Paradise to just below the point where we needed snow/ice hiking equipment. Oh, what a view! Sure wish I could do that again, but too old and worn out for that, now!
