  1. Close it down, hand each lady five bux and tell ’em to take the bus down to Sideshow Bob’s Freak Show to see if they can qualify for a gig there. There’s always Ringling Bros as well, but unfortunately Jerry Springer has passed on…

  2. A friend, who was a very successful beach volleyball player, has been discussing the business of sports over the past couple of years, very enlightening stuff. He has talked about NBA/MLB/NHL/NFL, very profitable team sports, Pro Tennis and Golf, very profitable individual sports with a very different dynamic, and all of the other leagues and such. Guess what – pretty much all of the other sports are huge money-losers, usually operated by a corporation or individual who *think* they can make it profitable. But they can’t, or at least not the way they are doing it. And of course his love, pro beach volleyball, has been among the worst after a phenomenal decade in the 90s.
They will keep running these leagues, and others like XFL, thinking that they can eventually make them work. But they can’t, because people only want to watch the best in the world compete against each other. And until they learn to run those leagues like the big boys – but in a different sport so at least maybe they have the best in the world – nobody will buy tickets.

  3. Oh, and sorry ladies, but ‘best in the world’ is almost exclusively men’s sports.
Although women’s tennis and golf do draw crowds and money, close to what the men bring in. But again only the premier leagues, LPGA and WTA.

  4. These narcissistic women in the WNBA are clearly overrated by even having a “league” that actually pays them to play basketball at a subpar level. A good high school boys team could beat them like a drum. They should get on their knees and thank God that they get paid anything when there is not enough demand for people to actually pay the cost of a ticket to watch them play.

Without the charity of the NBA these women would at best end up being a basketball version of “The Queen and Her Court” softball team from when I was a kid. The Queen and Her Court was a 5 person, women’s (mostly) softball team that traveled around in the 1970’s playing men’s amateur softball teams as an exhibition (somewhat of a carnival act that supported the team), They came to the small town that I grew up in to play an “all star” team of local men’s softball players. The Queens were pretty good softball players, but they couldn’t even beat the local team during the exhibition. But it was good, clean entertainment that allowed them to make somewhat of a living from the ticket sales. The WNBA players should thank their lucky stars that they get paid anything.

  5. Had some fun last night watching the NY Mets/Yankees Subway Series game at Citi Field. Mets TV Booth guys were trolling the Yankees Michael Kay . Mets have the best TV booth in Baseball. Kay was annoyed that the Mets bought some ads for the “best Booth in Baseball” during his little show .

  6. They can do what ever they want as long as I am not coerced or worse, forced, to support it. Pro loogie chucking? Great! Pro nail clipping or hotdog eating? Great! You betcha! Get after it folks! Just leave my wallet alone while you’re at it. Watching a bunch of giant colored lesbians bounce a ball around and throw it at a hoop? Nah, I got grass to mow… or a deck to wash… or paint to scrape… or beers and how to get that ignition right on the Harley…

  7. Several years ago, I got a wake-up call from a friend who also likes baseball. The Angels had just agreed to pay Albert Pujols (disclaimer: I am an Albert Pujols fan) $250 million dollars when it was clear that Albert was near the end of his career. Fans were calling their local radio station complaining about the “waste” of money.

But, as my friend pointed out, it’s not our money – it’s Arte Moreno’s money. And I don’t directly have to give any of my money to the Angels; I don’t have to buy tickets or pay for expensive concessions, I don’t have to by Angels merchandise, and I can watch every Angels game on television or listen to them on radio. Finally, I’m not personally on the hook for Albert’s salary.

The WNBA will never be the NBA despite the fact that it’s being marketed as the NBA. It’s a different kind of basketball which relies more on passing and teamwork and less on giant men bulling their way to the rim. Clark is a great shooter and a great passer, and that’s a draw for many basketball fans. But too many WNBA players and executives are pissed that a white woman is drawing crowds and attention when they should be greatful for full arenas and more television exposure.

  8. I saw a WNBA clip last week, defense got the ball at the busy end of the court and threw down to the other end where just one of their players – a premier player BTW – was headed to the basket. She had an open court and went for the SLAMMM!!!, no actually she did a layup.
That’s why nobody watches. Even given the open opportunity to do some showtime she did nothing interesting.

  9. For anyone interested, here’s a video of the pitcher (Rosie Black) and catcher appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson with a few people (including professional baseball player Jimmy Wynn (aka “The Toy Cannon” who was an accomplished player in his own right) trying to hit a fast pitch from Rosie. She could really throw pretty hard and had a few trick pitches as well. The video is as entertaining as I remember when I was a kid watching her pitch.

The problem with a 5 person team is they can’t cover everything. The pitcher and catcher, plus a first baseman (that also covered part of where a normal second baseman would), a shortstop (a guy pretending to be a girl, although I don’t think he was trans LOL) that covered some of second base, short stop and third base quite well, and a single outfielder. My local team eventually figured out that if they could put the ball in play (especially in the outfield) that they could score a few runs. I think the final score was something like 4-2 or 5-3, but The Queen and her Court was really entertaining to watch as they were really talented and a well practiced team.

  10. It’s pretty good ball. Clark is amazing. Clark has the ability to drain threes from mid court. And her coach is limiting her shots and wants her only to shoot twos. I kind of get it. The team still needs a point guard. But on the closing seconds of the last game they had against their arch rivals the coach drew up a play with Clark passing to a designated shooter. She air balled it and the fever lost the game by one point. Post game interview the coach was pissed at Clark for not taking the shot. Clark needs to ask to be traded.
The problem with the WNBA is it’s a bunch of women playing. They’ll never have a market.
