Activists threatened mass protests if Rod Rosenstein is removed from the Mueller investigation

For nearly as long as FBI special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating Russian election meddling, activists have been planning mass protests.

Hundreds of protests across the US, organized by MoveOn and other progressive groups, are planned to begin if Trump fires Mueller or deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, who appointed him. They would also begin if the president prevents the investigation from being “conducted freely,” MoveOn says.

Today, those fears may have been realized when Trump asked attorney general Jeff Sessions for his resignation. Sessions, who had recused himself from the investigation, will be replaced by Matt Whitaker, a former US Attorney who has opposed the Russia investigation from the start. Whitaker is reportedly taking control of the probe from Rosenstein.

The Special Counsel told Quartz it has no comment on the report; MoveOn, a 20-year old progressive policy and activism group, didn’t immediately respond to questions about the protests.

While Rosenstein has not been fired, MoveOn’s website promises to respond to any “actions that would prevent the investigation from being conducted freely,” including “replacing” Rosenstein. If the actions happen after 2pm, MoveOn’s website says, the protests will occur at noon the following day.

Over 900 protests have been planned around the United States, and MoveOn claims that more than 400,000 people have signed up so far.

If these groups live up to their threats, their protests would come as Trump faces a new challenge from Congress, after the Nov. 6 midterms handed control of the House of Representatives to Democrats. Democratic party leaders have already vowed to investigate the Trump administration’s alleged corruption and are pledging to investigate any obstruction of the Mueller investigation.

  2. Solution’s simple: Leave Rosenstein in his position of DAG reporting to acting AG Whitaker. But then Whitaker would be Rosie’s boss in all areas including the Mueller investigation witch hunt. Much could be done with that setup, and any conflicts between Whitaker and Rosie would be personnel matters not to be discussed in public.

  9. Brad, one look at that guy and I know he is an improvement over Jeff Sessions. I’m not trying to dump on Jeff, but he didn’t get it done. I bet there will be another role for him to play.

    Obviously Trump knew this guy was there all along. Mid Terms are over and DJT is not screwing around. I don’t understand his timing. Apparently he didn’t want to rattle the cage until after the mid terms. Curious minds want to know why?

  13. Brad, here is what I would like to think. He knew he couldn’t be everyplace, covering every race. Purposely put a special emphasis on the Senate. The plan to release the FISA documents will bring down a bunch of Congress critters, then we can get those vacancies in a special election. I know, it’s a political wet dream, but I’m going with it.

  14. There were a series of “resignations” ( some were actually firings) of higher ups in the DOJ when Trump took office including Rachel Brand who would have been in line to be Whittiker now. It was suggested that getting her out was specifically so Whittiker could be put in place.   16. The Mueller probe is clear harassment. So why not reciprocate. Assign a special council to look into Hillary and Obama.

  19. Maybe Trump is giving this guy a chance to show his stuff. Giving him free reign to put some teeth back in the department. On the plus side he’s been inside this whole time and knows who the criminals are. We shall see.

  28. We’ve definitely turned-the-page on the Russia Hoax. It was smart of Trump to wait until after the mid-terms on the FISA/Russia stuff.
    This is telling me that Swamp Creatures are VERY worried; A protest/offensive like this did not just spring up today…they were ready to do this based on a certain “trigger.” They have to massively, pre-emptively, rally people for the optics, hysterics, and narrative now because they know it’s all about to come crashing down.

    The enemy isn’t taking a break just because the mid-terms are over and they won the House. Buckle up, pray up, be sober and vigilant.
