A video of Joe Biden making its way around the internet has gone viral—but it is a cherry-picked clip from a longer Biden speech that misrepresents what he was really saying, putting renewed focus on the issue of misinformation and the role it may play during the 2020 campaign. Per Mediaite, the misleading footage was taken from remarks Biden made at a campaign event in Derry, NH, on Monday. He was asked by an audience member about domestic violence and sexual assault against women and his vision for putting a stop to it. In his full answer to that question (which can be seen here), Biden talked for almost 15 minutes about how doing so means “fundamentally changing our culture in America,” and how legal permissiveness of wife-beating originated with our English forebears.
Biden’s comments in context illustrate his desire to tackle the problem of domestic violence. The problem is, a Twitter user picked out just 20 seconds of that longer explanation and posted it, leaving Biden saying these words: “Our culture, our culture, it’s not imported from some African nation or some Asian nation, it’s our English jurisprudential culture, our European culture,” which could lead viewers to think Biden was touting an American culture of white identity, a view often spewed by the alt-right. Although fact-checkers quickly pounced on it, Vox notes that “deceptive videos such as this are part of a broader problem”
The mainstream media does this all the time.
I’m honestly just surprised that Jackass Joe didn’t say:
“our culture, it’s not imported from some Seven-Eleven or something”
Turnabout is fair play.
WOW, there must be at least 50 people in that rally !!!
Way to go Joe !!!
Seriously?
My “Give-O-Shit” meter is PEGGED over this!!! 😮
At… ZERO. 😳
How does it feel when the shoe is on the other foot?
