AG Barr’s new asylum rules vital for border security

AT: Attorney General William Barr has recently changed the rules for detaining some asylum-seekers.  He has ordered that those seeking asylum who are caught crossing the border illegally be held without bond until an expedited ruling can be made on their status.

Naturally, this has elicited howls of outrage from the Left.  The L.A. Times called the rule change “deplorable.”  But examining the rule objectively, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that this rule change is necessary to protect our borders.

Jonathan Tobin explains in National Review:

The Border Patrol’s resources have been stretched to the limit as large numbers of migrants from Central America have been crossing the southern border.  Some of these individuals request asylum at a port of entry, which is the preferred process.  But others enter the country illegally and claim asylum only when they are caught.

Under the current asylum system, anyone who makes such a claim could be immediately paroled into the United States to await the adjudication of his or her case by federal immigration courts.  Many of those who do so fade into the shadows instead of showing up to court, knowing they cannot show they are actually eligible for asylum in the U.S.  While liberals have blasted Trump for using the phrase “catch and release” to depict the process by which Central American asylum seekers have been treated after crossing the border, it accurately describes a process that is adding to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants [sic] already here.

One might sympathize with the plight of people coming from poverty-stricken countries hoping for a fresh start in America, and the law gives illegal immigrants [sic] the right to request asylum from within the country.  But the fact that so many are using frivolous asylum requests as a get-out-of-jail-free card after they get caught breaking the law is both overwhelming the system and making a mockery of the intent of our asylum policies.

That’s where Barr’s order, which the Justice Department is clearly hoping will act to deter faux asylum seekers from entering the United States, comes in.    more

  1. Funny, I just referred to this in an earlier post. While I appreciate the efforts/attempts to plug the dam a little here, a little there, I just wish when they issue these bandaids they’d put out the costs associated with “caring for the asylees”, i.e, BP capture, transportation, medical care (now mandated EVERY illegal must be given a medical exam), housing, food, school, etc etc.

We need “big beautiful charts” (like the national debt board), so taxpayers will understand what’s being afforded these illegals v money that should be spent on their own families.

  2. Let’s also emphasize that they are NOT citizens!
They do NOT have the rights that our Citizens have.
They are afforded basic human rights, but that’s it!
A LOT of countries around the world don’t even offer that to invaders!
And while we’re at it, let’s knock off the asylum Bullshit.
They’re coming for the free shit democRATs are telling them they are somehow ENTITLED to!

    Oh…. and Voting is mandatory!

  3. “Make the enemy live up to his own rulebook.”

    There’s a golden opportunity here.

UPON REJECTION OF ASYLUM CLAIMS AT THE BORDER, OR CAPTURE OF ILLEGALS ALREADY HERE, IMMEDIATELY BUS EVERY ONE OF THEM TO THE NEAREST SANCTUARY CITY AFTER “TAGGING” THEM BY COLLECTING BIOMETRIC DATA. IF THEY LEAVE THAT CITY AND ARE CAUGHT, THEY ARE IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO A SANCTUARY CITY “FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY.”

Because, after all, that’s why Democrats say sanctuary cities exist: for the safety of illegals.

    Okay. Let’s run with that.

Then, after 10,000 or so are bused in, let the leftists in those cities sue the Trump admin for AGREEING WITH DEMOCRATS by dumping those illegals FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY.

Trump then uses the lawsuits, which go nowhere, in non-stop 2020 ads.

That forces whoever the Dem nominee is (Buttgig at this point) to either agree with Trump that they should go to sanctuary cities by the thousands, or that they should be allowed to roam free, DEFLATING THE WHOLE POINT OF SANCTUARY CITIES EXIST TO KEEP ILLEGALS SAFE.

MAKE THE SODOMITE STATE IT ON RECORD ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

Trump’s 2020 ads will write themselves either way and make one side or the other hate Buttgig even more.

  4. John – I love it! Make it The Hollywood & Beverly Hills bus tour…
“Ok people… This is an “Inclusive Community” so just let us know when you see something you like and we’ll let you off to squat there!”

  5. I only agree to actually busing the invaders into ‘sanctuary cities’ if they are effectively walled off from the rest of us. Road blocks, enforced borders closing them in like medieval fortresses left to starve.

Since that won’t be done, what the President has done is enough: shine light on the hypocrisy of Liberals who want to help everyone by helping themselves to the wallets of others.

As my patience is exhausted, I review my cache of ammo. They have made it clear, repeatedly, that they are Enemies of our Nation.

Not really because it’s not news to anyone expect, probably, the illegals coming over here. They’re in for a shock when they see first hand how little they and their kids actually mean to the Left.

But Americans on the left already know they’re NIMBY hypocrites. They do not care because they haven’t been MADE to care (yet). So no change there (yet).

Americans on the Right already know Leftists are hypocrites. So no change there either.

Yes, it does throw into the starkest relief just how hypocritical they are — Cher self-serving, faux patriotic backpedaling is a great example. But there can’t be many Americans who will be genuinely surprised by any of this.

Still, MUCH more of it needs forced from them in advance of elections. Make them abide by their own preaching; they’ll destroy themselves by doing it or discredit themselves by denying it.
