I love it when politicians get mad because they got stabbed in the back.
Yes, I understand that when Walmart backed out of some agreements they made with DC politicians it meant that public money was wasted. (One district committed 90 million dollars to get an area “ready for Walmart.”) It still feels like justified karma to me.
Walmart backed out of developing a superstore because other Walmarts in the area were underperforming.
See how it feels to have a promise broken at your expense? Maybe you should start keeping your promises.
In the article I found out that in private talks with DC officials, they pointed at DC’s minimum wage hike, mandated minimum hours for part-time employees, and some sort of strong-arm “contribution” (can’t find details now), plus higher construction costs (possibly the result of more regulation) and lower than projected sales at the new DC stores built recently.
Seems to me like there were broken govt promises here, too. No surprise.
I agree with Uncle Al except that the city may not have mentioned those plans to Walmart before the “handshake” deal or they weren’t contemplated until afterword. It’s just so very Democrat like to whine and bitch when they get smacked after they’ve changed the rules of the game. In any event if this “food desert” crap is so important then have Obama sign an executive order to forces Whole Foods to open locations in those areas that Walmart is no longer going to open. Hey, I’m sure the trendy place will be happy to supply all the fresh fruits and veggies the neighbourhood hoods want not that they’ll actually shop there. I’m not a big Walmart fan but these guys know their business and if they decided to back away they sure as hell had some good reasons to do it especially Sam’s kids are all left leaners.
I don’t think Walmart wanted to see half the goods in the store walk out every day, or see it burned down the next time the boofers get a wild hair up their ass.
Even Walmart knows they can’t justify 50 loss prevention associates.
Wal-Mart seems to be in trouble. They’re closing almost 200 stores. This may have something to do with renege on deals.
Well surely they aren’t mad that public money was wasted. Must be something else!
