Shares of American biotech firm Gilead Sciences rose nearly 5% Monday after an official from the World Health Organization said that Gilead’s drug remdesivir is showing signs that it may be able to help treat the deadly coronavirus.
Gilead Sciences (GILD) was the second-best performing stock in the S&P 500 and was just one of two stocks in the Nasdaq-100 that was trading higher on Monday, when the Dow plunged more than 1,000 points due to fears about the disease spreading to Italy, South Korea and Iran.
“There is only one drug right now that we think may have real efficacy and that’s remdesivir,” Bruce Aylward, an assistant director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said at a press conference in Beijing.
WHO officials added that clinical trials for remdesivir in humans are now taking place and results could be available within weeks.
Biotech company AbbVie (ABBV) has said that it has seen promising results for treatment using a mixture of two of its HIV medications and Tamiflu, which is made by Swiss pharma giant Roche (RHHBF) and Japan’s Chugai Pharmaceutical Co (CHGCY).
Hopefully, the outbreak in the U.S. – if it happens (could be happening right now since there isn’t much testing) – will be postponed and at least coincide with the availability of antiviral med’s to reduce both the death rate and public panic.

WHO is saying the Coronavirus has peaked in China. Good, if true. And who trusts WHO? I sure hope so though, and that containment policies are sufficient.

…when feeding billions of peasants that Communism has deliberately made dependant, I’m afraid “weird shit” is gonna HAVE to be on the menu from time to time…
And I suppose they have the facilities to crank out 7.7 billion inoculations? Or shall we go all “western world dominant” and start with roughly 1 billion treatments for US and Europe.
If there’s a silver lining to any of this, it’s the wake-up call that we have to correct the Clinton-Bush-Obama offshoring of our pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Obola, Jarrett, and a few others made $Millions off that Avian flu bullshit.

I have a natural inclination to NOT believe anything from China, WHO, the UN, the FedGov, the NY Times, WaPo, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSDNC, CNN or other categorical liar.

I’m currently experiencing a little guilty schaedenfreud (sp?). There’s a news bit going around that Iran’s minister of health is giving a news conference to a room full of journalists and he’s saying how they’ve got it under control, but he’s got it himself – he’s at the podium wiping the fever sweat from his face. I wonder if he spread it to everyone in the room.
