Baelin’s Route – When An NPC Becomes The Hero

NPC stands for non-player character that the game’s participant doesn’t control. They are bland, shallow, and uninteresting element often used in computer fantasy games to populate the artificial environment to provide a more realistic experience.

This production from New Zealand is quite possibly as good as anything on offer this summer at the local movie house with a character story arc that is quite enjoyable. Watch

  1. Guess you have to play computer games to fully appreciate it. I tried to play along with the whole “NPC” thing back when it was popular, but I always felt like I wasn’t quite in on the joke.

  2. Thank you. hollywood could use some original thought. Very well done. I hate long openings and almost bailed but stayed with it. An homage to all those guys in Star Trek in red uniforms.

  3. I’m familiar with Viva La Dirt League’s work.

Excellent humor skits on gaming. They make fun of everything they can game-wise. Like jumping from third floors and only hurting themselves a little bit and re-gassing a vehicle by pouring the gas on top of it with the other players going WTF?!

That said, I enjoyed it, but they really broke a lot more game rules than usual with this one. Why does the main NPC strictly stick to his set script while the other NPC is conversing like a regular player and then being strict on it’s role when it’s convenient for this skit? The players (adventurers) are perfectly represented here. Especially with the frustration with the NPCs and wanting to kill the NPCs. That happens all the time.

With Bailen awakening like Pinocchio being the crux of this skit, it is kind of spoiled by the female NPC already being fully liberated from her talk-script. There’s an incongruity there that doesn’t jive with the premise here. Yeah, these kind of things can ruin movies for me. Like – Gah! What are you doing? How much suspension of reality must I do to enjoy this?

All that said, Viva La Dirt league has done a good job here because I found it entertaining – sometimes finding the faults is entertaining too, but there is a lot of beauty and effort that went into this. Which is what I think Fur was referring to!

Their work is usually very short just to riff on a simple point of play. This is way beyond their usual effort.

    The best part?

The SCENERY!! OH MY! The things I hope heaven is full of!
