  1. “James Stewart”. Ironic, the actor Jimmy Stewart was my pops wing commander. Pops had nothing but good things to say about him. He flew every mission everyone else did.
RIP Mr. Halvorsen. 101 years old should be celebrated. Although I hope you’re not responsible for WKRP dropping frozen turkeys.

  2. I met him about a decade ago, when he candy-bombed my kids’ elementary school. Really nice guy. He was in a Piper Cub, and dropped little parachutes with candy over a big field near the school, as part of an effort to show the kids what the Berlin Airlift was all about. I can’t imagine the woke public school system ever doing something like that agan.

Check out “The Big Lift” if you get a chance. It’s a pretty good movie about the airlift and Berlin life at the time.

  3. I had the book a few years ago, not surprisingly called the Candy Bombers. A very good read and a good change from the other war books I have that cover such terrible happenings.

He was a really nice man and went out of his way to give the Berlin kids some joy in their bleak lives. The only thing that concerned me was the kid’s dental health.
