Black Man Given Posthumous Pardon On Eve of Duluth Lynching Anniversary

Courthouse News

A black man who served as a scapegoat for a lynch mob in 1920 received Minnesota’s first-ever posthumous pardon Friday, 100 years after his conviction was used to justify the murder of three of his co-workers.

After a mob lynched three black circus workers in the northern industrial center of Duluth on June 15, 1920, their co-worker Max Mason was arrested and tried for the rape of a white woman, Irene Tusken.

Jerry Blackwell, of the Minneapolis firm Blackwell Burke, argued to Minnesota’s pardon board Friday that the rape was fictitious and Mason had been arrested to grant legitimacy to the killings. More

  1. Meanwhile, FOX News is carrying conference of black lawyers stirring things up in Atlanta after black dude shot by police at a Wendy’s. Atlanta police chief also resigned.

I just saw a brief video of the shooting. It was only a few seconds long. I withhold judgement until more facts are in. The victim did reach back and point something at the cop. It’s hard to tell what it is. I also saw the video of the lawyers or family of the victim. It was pretty dramatic.

Whatever else happens in this case, the optics of the cop chasing and then shooting the man really eff things up more than they have been, which hardly seems possible. It’s as bad as the Floyd video, and something we definitely do not want right now. It’s going to divide the country even more and make healing a lot more difficult.

It is another sad day for America. It is all so screwed up right now.

  3. …ok, everyone who was in this lynch mob, raise your hands.
    (Nothing)

…everyone who’s ever been in ANY lynch mob, raise your hand.
    (Still nothing).

…everyone who was ALIVE in 1920, raise your hand.
    (STILL nothing).

…No one alive TODAY was even alive THEN? Then WTF is THIS doing as something we’re apologising for NOW, when not even the WITNESSES are still alive…

…no one can apologize for the evil of another. This is pointless, meaningless virtue signalling…

  4. hey if the black running from the cops wasn’t as fast as he was, would he have been shot?

if you are going to run from the cops, slow down and save your life.

  5. There’s a meaningless, feel-good measure that costs nothing and accomplishes nothing.

Pretty typical legal bullshit – notoriety for the firm and zip for the dead guy.

  6. I read this morning that the guy had taken a stun or taser gun from a policeman. He ran for a bit them turned around and pointed it at them and fired it. You can see a flash coming out of it. It was after that the policed shot him.

The man was very stupid or very drunk/stoned. If you want to live, you don’t point any object at the police, not even your finger.
